LARP

LARP (Live action Role-play) takes traditional elements of table top role-play and brings them into the physical world. While in your table top game you might have a goblin described to you and then roll a few dice to see if you can hit them, in LARP you’ll hit them if you can actually hit them!

In a party of 6-12 players, you’ll experience an adventure while guided by a Referee. The Referee will describe locations, creatures, and any magical effects that you encounter or create on your journey. Meanwhile, a team of crew volunteers known as Monsters will be playing all the denizens of the world: villagers, guards, merchants, and of course actual monsters. How you interact with them is up to you!

We use foam and latex weapons specifically designed for LARP combat to keep the fighting safe but still reward your real-world skills. There is also a plethora of spells and abilities available to characters and Monsters to aid in combat and outside of it, so even if you don’t fancy wielding a weapon there are plenty of ways to join in the fun.  

Most of our adventures take place in the atmospheric Chislehurst Caves, so you have a real-life labyrinth to explore, and the fun continues all year whatever the weather.

Are you a New Player?

If you’ve never done anything like this before, don’t worry! We regularly run New Player events for people that are coming to the club (and to LARP) for the first time.

We've a blog post here that goes through an FAQ of your first time at the caves, but some points are detailed below!

A member of our New Player team will be ready to greet you and talk you through character creation, as well as the basic rules and safety. Your adventuring party will be made up of mostly new players but also a few old hands to act as guides if you get stuck on what’s going on.

We’ll provide all the equipment and costume that you’ll need for your day if you’re starting out. We advise wearing loose, comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting chalky and shoes with good ankle support (walking boots are best) again that you don’t mind getting a little mucky in the cave.

There’s absolutely no need to fill your head with rules, but if you prefer to be informed before the day a full introduction to the system can be found in our New Player Guide.

The first three games you play cost just £20 each, a special discounted rate so that you can see if it’s a good fit for you.

Club History

The earliest LARP events in the UK were held by Treasure Trap in 1982 at Peckforton Castle. When the company closed two years later, a number of other LARP systems sprang up, using rules based on their predecessor. One of those clubs was Labyrinthe, founded by Pete Garner of Garner Adventure Tours (GAT) in 1985.

Early in 1986, the club relocated to the site we now call home: Chislehurst Caves. Pete and his team set to work developing the tunnels to add even more atmosphere to the caves for the players adventuring there. Quickly, the club became one of the largest and most active LARP clubs in the country.

Pete continued to run Labyrinthe until 1993, when he handed over the reins to Jan McMannus, a long-term club member and employee of Garner Adventure Tours. Jan began a new era of creativity for the club, keeping the fundamental core rules as they were but evolving the game-world plots and backgrounds. Under Jan’s influence, the weekly adventures at Labyrinthe began to have a more cohesive effect on the world, and recurring heroes and villains started to emerge as the game-world continuity solidified.

In 2001, Jan passed ownership of the club on to Simon Morgan. Simon had been a part of Labyrinthe for a long time and had founded the well known LARP weapon manufacturer Eldritch. Even today Simon’s weapons are a mainstay of the caves, and he still works with us to supply the weapons that we use for our games.

Ownership of Labyrinthe transferred once more in May of 2006 to Phil Branscombe, Andy Byatt, and Duncan Matthias. They set to work building on the previous success of the club and spent a lot of time updating the building work of the 80s to modernise the interior of the caves. Additionally they created the first website with online booking system, and vibrant chat forums that this website replaces many years later.

Phil and Andy stepped aside in December 2013, leaving Duncan in sole ownership of the club. With a background in the building trade, Duncan continued to invest into new features in the caves, revitalising the space and adding even more hideaways, structures, and set pieces for adventurers to discover. Additionally lots of work has gone into safety procedures, health and safety compliance, as well as adding atmospheric and emergency lighting to the three square miles of caves. The result of all of this was turning a unique location into the premier LARP site of the country.

During the Covid Lockdown, The Club transformed its arrival experience with a new major building project: the Labyrinthe reception and retail space. A “full bricks-and-mortar” store and a gateway to the cave itself at the entrance to the Labyrinthe tunnels. It quickly gained a vibrant and dedicated Magic: the Gathering community, which is a nod to GAT who helped organise the first organised MTG play in the UK many years before. It also acts as a welcoming face to curious members of the public interested in joining the adventure.

In December 2022, Edd Insley joined the management team bringing several years of retail expertise into the business. The new player experience has been revamped so that more people can join the club and engage in the wonderful world of LARP.

The story of the Club however would not be complete with out mention to the hundreds of club members who have dedicated time and energy into writing rules, helping with building projects, making costume, crewing and refereeing thousands of adventures over the past 40 years.
