The Making of Original Dungeons and Dragons

Amongst the plethora of Dungeons and Dragons books on our shelves, this one is unique as it is a look at how the original D&D rules were written.  It’s a chunky, hardback book, even by D&D standards, and comes with four different coloured page marker ribbons so you can save up to four different pages at once.

Inside you will find the earliest predecessors of the modern core rule books: The Player’s Handbook, The Dungeon Master’s Guide and The Monster Manual.  It shows us both images of some of the original publications but also the notes surrounding them.  Conversations and letters between Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, typed and handwritten, show how Dungeons and Dragons started and evolved.  The number of revisions does set the precedent the number of editions and errata that have happened with the modern game – clearly the rules were always evolving, even back then!

What’s really interesting about this book is the time period it covers.  Not only do we get the first ever draft of Dungeons and Dragons (not before released) but we also get copies of Gygax’s earlier attempts at table top games – Thangorodrim and Chainmail, which as you read through you can see how D&D began to take shape.

Whilst this doesn’t have any current rules in it, it makes a great gift for your forever DM, or the D&D player who already has everything.  It’s a limited run piece, similar to the alternative art books we get in for being a WPN store, and we only have a finite amount in stock – once they’re gone, they’re gone.  A surefire way to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Dungeons and Dragons.
