The Lord of House Brokestone watched as his ever loyal and attentive retainer Vilhelm approached and bowed with his usual exaggerated deference. He had given up instructing Vilhelm that such deference, at least in private, was wasted.
His House, until recently, had become so small and without influence as to barely qualify as a Noble House at all. Indeed prior to the appearance of a benefactor six months ago the Lord had been seriously considering approaching, or attempting to approach, House Stoneheart to request protection, even as far as vassalage, against their debts. The benefactor though had advised them on various courses of action and investments that would be wise to take, that had already started to show promise. “The mercenaries were successful beyond belief my Lord. They were able to reach the threat and confirm that it was not a threat. The Lord thoughtfully stroked his beard: “So the demon was not actually a threat?” “Not only not a threat but apparently educated and quite reasonable for a demon.” “Well, that’s all good news then I guess. Our benefactor should be pleased…” Lord Brokestone spoke aloud as if trying to persuade himself that this was the case. There was something not quite right but he had done as had been asked and paid well enough that he would leave the matter as was. -------------------- Will Power - will@labyrinthe.co.uk
