A mighty roar of sound like a thousand crystal glasses smashing in unison hit the herders as they instinctively threw their arms over their heads expecting a rain of glass to fall from on high. A moment later the ground itself shook so violently they and their herd were sent sprawling to the floor, the cattle braying and bellowing loudly in panic as the world moved under them.
As the ground slowly stopped shaking and they tried to rise it was if they were wading through slurry, they felt heavy, and the air was as thick as the sweetest syrup but held an acrid and fetid scent of decay. The herd, those that had managed to get to their feet tried to scatter but the same unseen eddies the herdsman found themselves wading through meant the cattle didn’t get far before they slumped exhaustedly to the ground. That night they sat around the fire, dining on one of the herd that had broken two legs in the strange earthquake and peered up at the sky wondering what had caused the occurrence. As they stared upwards mapping the stars to see if any of them were missing, as one they all disappeared from the sky. Turning in surprise towards each other and the light of the fire it dawned on them the stars had not vanished they simply couldn’t see anything at all. -------------------- Will Power - will@labyrinthe.co.uk
