This has been quietly bugging me for literally decades now.
Why are bombs called caches?
As far as I can find, it's not a thing anywhere but here.

Traditionally a Cache is a collection of hidden items.

Often used to describe explosives or weapons.

But you don't throw that sort of cache, you keep your explosives in it.
That's like saying "I need to dig in the garden, I will dig using the shed."

I've always assumed that someone writing rules in the pre-google 90's had heard the phrase "a cache of explosives" but didn't know what it meant.
I am eager to be proven wrong.

That's pretty much it tbh, the only way you could describe it is a collection of small explosives hidden in a package.

Lol, always thought it was a bit odd to. As far as I can see as others have said it refers to something hidden like a cache of bombs / weapons. So unless you are literally picking up the hiding spot filled with bombs and throwing that it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense smile.gif

Doubtless prompted by a desire to avoid using the word bomb

I've wasted longer than I should have in my lunch break trying to find which game it was and failed. But I played a first person shooter style game a while ago that referred to an explosive that you planted and then set off remotely as a cache bombs.

I half hope that it was an ex-cavey spreading the name.

Yeah, I suspect Giles is probably right, and which ever GSM wrote the ability wanted to use something other then the word bomb, especially if it was around the time of bombings in London or similar. I quite like it as a name for them.

You throw it to someone and call out "Catch". It usually works.
