To all candidates,

My questions are:

Are you light of heart, dark of heart or in between?

Please rank in order of importance the following: the law, the life of a peon, the land, your own vitae?

Do you believe a mission for the greater good of the Empire is more important than the life of a peon or not?

Thanks

Rangar

Steff - You're question is a brilliant one, and if I may I will ask for some time to decide and to meet more less experienced Knights. Clearly much of the year has been focussed towards Cyrell. But if I have to answer at this moment I believe it will be Tai if he would do the honour. He has just been reborn and clearly has a lot of experience both as Lord Knight and as a junior knight.

Kiwi another excellent question, one I believe will be the hardest to answer. We all know I ain't the best with words, espically if they're in glyph shape, that's something Louis loves though. I think bravery is an over rated idea, one you can't put into a bracket, I just want people to do the right thing at the right time and realise it's not all about titles and artefacts and grulls.

What do I look for in a leader?

I believe they should be to able to listen when they think they are right. To inspire the best in others without even realising it and when needed sit back and let others take the lead.

Is a truly brave act carried out fearlessly, or in spite of one's fear?

Erm I don't know! Maybe a bit of both, maybe an Illusions of Grandeur spell....

If you were founding the Knights for the first time, which groups would you bar from joining?

I intend to answer all the questions raised with one reply and add future answers to the same notices such they can be found all together.

I thank all our Brotherhood that pose these questions and hope it helps bring clarity from each candidate and allows those amongst our order to cast their vote with confidence in their chosen candidate.

QUOTE(Kail @ Jan 22 2018, 05:33 PM) *
As candidates have started saying their views for the Knights going forward I thought I'd start off the questions.

What do you think the Knights should do about the ruling classes in Amlas cutting their people's head's off for not putting their faces in the dirt as the nobles walk past?

Would you lead the Knights against the Empire or the Empress if they/she started treating their people in this way?
Kail

I know that while our order numbers brothers from across the planes that many knights come from the land that forms the Empire whether they believe in it or not. I spent many of my young years amongst many of the earliest visitors to our shores from the land of Amlas. I learnt of their culture first hand and saw the conflict that those from across the see who took our oath found themselves in at times when their society or family decreed a path that differed from what many from our lands deemed as fair or acceptable.

Recently it has begun to become a little clearer to historians and scholars within our realms how Amlas came to be, it’s foundation, how the clans and effectively their nobility rose and formed the bedrock on which their society grew.
What is plain from this learning is culture and customs and this goes for many others worlds differ and that as strange and foreign they may seem to us are potentially natural to those that belong within that society and more importantly like the folklore of many of the common folk in the Empire it is based on more than just imagination and whim.

I do not believe it is as simple as the question portrays or generalises.

When we first go to another world, realm or similar we should not seek to blindly impose our ways and beliefs on others especially without understanding their ways and the reasons behind them. Amlas is no different.
This is not to say that rulers who are despots, that abuse their power, demean or bring suffering upon their people should be left alone or unchallenged.

Be it Amlas, the Empire, Legend or another realm our oath remains the heart and the spirit of our order. Where there is a need we should act but we can act in more ways than engaging in conflict.

The shield becomes before the sword in our oath and we as an order should remember to think and if needs be defend before we strike with our sword.

If a Lord is executing his people for crimes real or imagined that do not warrant such a fatal sentence which is I feel the core of the question then a knights duty is to intervene as an advocate for those being unjustly treated.

As to the Empire of Glass and the ruler of the Throne if they became a despot, if they became maddened and such unjust law was being enacted then yes I would stand against it. Just as I did at the time when Amora’s reign and sanity was waning.

I do not believe it will happen while I still draw breath and so many of my brothers act as influencers and voices of reason and import within the institutions, cities and Halls of Nobility that the Empire consists of.

QUOTE(Nibs @ Jan 23 2018, 10:10 AM) *
Prior to finally caving to Her nagging encouragement and joining the Knights last year, I have witnessed first hand, on a number of occassions, Knights defending their brothers and sisters (as is right and proper), at the expense of non-knights. Non-knights are left to fend for themselves. I'm not talking about non-Knights that recklessly throw themselves into situations or fights that they can't handle, I'm talking about fellow mercenaries that have simply become "split from the pack" as it were. Fellow mercenaries that were putting their Vitae on the line in the same way Knights were, to achieve the same goals, to protect the same people and lands. Fellow mercenaries that were less than 100 feet from groups of Knights and still well within sight and hearing, and basically offered no support. This apparent attitude "only Knights matter" has also been expressed to me by others, both within our Orders and externally.

How do the candidates plan to change not only this perception, but also the actions have led to it? Do they even see anything wrong with it? Peons see us as their defenders. Many non-Knight mercenaries see us as a clique that only looks after itself.

Brother Tubbs
Friar of Border and Knight of the Land

Brother Tubbs this is what some may have eluded to in my statement as a candidate, specifically these words:

While we are a brotherhood we must move away from becoming insular and turning our backs upon the vitae blessed who have not sworn the oath. The Knights should inspire those around them, by our deeds and actions we are a rallying point for others to find their courage, a clarion call in the chaos of conflict, a banner boldly held aloft to call our allies to the sanctuary of our line such we may defend them as we do one another.

The order should grow through the deeds of all those within the brotherhood, when we fight beside those allied with us we should treat them with the respect and honour we do our brothers, we should seek to defend, protect, empower and cherish their lives as we do our brothers in the hope they will see the strength and virtue within our brotherhood and come willingly to our banner. No one is unimportant or should be judged as such because they have not taken the oath and anyone who believes otherwise I will stand vigil beside until they see the truth and virtue in my words.

How will I address this, I will challenge this behaviour and belief when I see it and ask all my brothers to do the same.

I intend to ensure that all those that come to our order are fully blooded as knights in the traditions of the original order and that I first became a squire many years ago. Educating and ensuring those take the oath are worthy of and upholding the oath to its spirit not its letter and that the Orders themselves do not take in squires unblooded and without a true understanding in their heart.

So yes I see this as wrong, this is not how our order grows, it is not how we ensure success and the safety of our brothers we are stronger with allies and friends we can trust and that in turn trust and respect us than as an isolated group seeking to change or save the world alone.

QUOTE(isbiraven @ Jan 23 2018, 12:20 PM) *
Can we expect to be called to defend any cottages at all in the year to come?

Many are eager to plan their time and training depending on this.

Link,
Imperial Wayfinder.

A good Knight is one that is ready to answer the call whenever it is heard or needed. I applaud your desire to do good work in the traditions of many of those Knights that have gone before in our order.

There are many cottages across the Empire and beyond that would always welcome a defender on their doorstep in the dark nights and I am sure I and many others would welcome into their lands to defend the commonfolk in their homes.

QUOTE(Christine @ Jan 23 2018, 12:46 PM) *
So questions -

Why did you join the Knights - I'm thinking where you were in your life, what particular thing or person inspired you to do it, that sort of thing?

When if at all have you thought about leaving the Knights, and why? How did you resolve that?

If people would rather not say, it being personal and all, I think we can all respect that, but I hope they're fair questions.

Tavis

I joined the Knights on Starsday 18th Deeber IM993. I was a young man 18 years of age trained but unblooded on the true battlefield.

I learned of the Knights first hand from many of those of my faith but no more so than Saladin who in that time was nothing short of awe inspiring to a young would be squire.

A Demon had crowned itself a king upon a throne and was ruling over a village in the foothills of the Brandins close to where I had been educated and upon learning this I took up a blade, swore my oath and set off to free the village from their vile master.

I have been and remained a knight through my three lifetimes I have been blessed with. Upon my return to the world of Primus I have had no hesitation in reaffirming and renewing my vows and oath.

As to leaving the order, no. To sunder my oath and leave the brotherhood would be to have failed, if the order was to become something abhorrent to me then I and my brothers have truly fallen from the path of the oath.

This is why I am honoured to stand and believe in the duty of the Lord Knight to act as not just a figure or one to decree orders but to shape, to mould the order, to invigorate and rejuvenate it and seek to make each and everyone of our order act with integrity and be beyond reproach.

QUOTE(ChrisB @ Jan 23 2018, 01:18 PM) *
Congratulations to all this Years nominee's

You are all strong candidates and I believe you would all make fine Lord Knight's

I have a few questions, but they are person specific rather than general.

Amorphus -

You have been a Knight and a follower of Michael for many a year, Faith is a very strong and powerful tool if used correctly, in recent experiences I have come across followers of your faith and others that have a very militant stand on certain things / creatures ie demons / undead or the summoners of such things, would you be able to put aside your own personal beliefs if it meant the protection of a land and the safety of its people was upheld?

Imrazi's Vessel
Sword of Imrazil

My faith and the Knights of the Land are deeply entwined. Duke Saladin founded both the faith of St. Michael and was the Summoner of the Knights of the Land. Many have been entrusted as Lords of Order over our history and Martaine and Robert have been chosen to lead the Brotherhood following Saladin’s original leadership.

My beliefs would not condemn a world to death and any that think they would should come and speak to me on my faith and I encourage them to do so.

Let me give you a scenario, we in our travels find a world infested with a demonic taint and with enclaves of demonic rulers and forces upon the world. We learn that the place spirit is tainted and to free the world we must free the place spirit of the demon possessing them.

The place spirit is hostile to us and it turns out embraced the power willingly.

Fighting back against the place spirit kills the demon possessing them, removes the demonic taint from the world but damns the world to destruction as a consequence.

Do I destroy the demon, do I order others to do the same? No and No. We find another way, it may take months, it may take years, we may lose brothers in the course of our actions.

I am a Noble I take the great freedom very seriously and my duty is to protect those I am responsible for and I extend that beyond the bounds on my own estates and land and apply those tenants as the core of my personal beliefs and duty.

If I cannot uphold the Knights Oath and am so blind as to act in a way which that is against what we stand for I would be damned by more than just Imrazil and his Virtues turning their gaze from me.

QUOTE(JackFlashblade @ Jan 23 2018, 05:39 PM) *
Greetings my fellow Knights.

One of the main things I believe would make a good Lord Knight is a steadfast dedication to organising musters to deal with the issues in the land.

I would be interested to hear what plans our 4 candidates have for organising musters over the next year if they were to be elected.

Price

These are the pledges if you will I have made and are my initial intentions:

To declare a day per season “Summoning Day” where we vow to don our armour, sheath our blades and pick up our shields and each and every brother able too attends a muster not under the banner of our Brotherhood but among the caste of the Vitae Blessed. Lending our strength, ideals and commitment to seeing good works done among the mercenary community with a depth of Knights present as in days of old.

To gather and send our Orders both combined and alone to act to defend the people and the land within these borders and beyond.

To encourage and entrust the nominated Deputy Lords of Order to lead musters to tackle threats, resolve dangers and defend those in need and blood a new cadre of Knights to such we can entrust the future to their hands.

There is much that can be done here in the Empire alone, both in the cities and the rural lands. I would hope to focus one of these Summoners days on The Rest itself.

That those musters I would entrust the Deputy Lords to lead would be ideal times to blood both younger Knights and those more recently sworn to our order.

We have many promises that have been made by Brothers past and present that need to be upheld and my intention is to ensure we as an order our aware of all that we have offered such that within the brotherhood Knights can show their mettle and their own leadership in seeing that threats are addressed, worlds are protected and even saved from what they face and our word is made true.

Our immediate concern is the world of Cyrell which I will speak to elsewhere.

(OOC: so it turns out there are a maximum number of quotes you can include in a post...so split the post)

QUOTE(draco @ Jan 23 2018, 07:36 PM) *
My question to all,

Who is your second that will help bring less experienced knights through the ranks?

As has been proven this year our Lord knight is only as good as his second. I believe that the more varied our opinions and beliefs then the stronger and more united we stand as a beacon to others

Steff

My honest answer is that I think it is hubris to name Lords or Orders, Knight of Unity, the Voice and such before being elected.

Nor do I believe in offering the such positions openly or behind closed doors in exchange for support.

We are nominated as individuals not as a collective or committee.

I would not ask someone to commit to acting in a position until I have that position to offer.

I do believe that we are a diverse order and that is one of our strengths we can and should use to the benefit of our order.

Like those who have yet to make up their minds on who they wish to lead them I would also chose to use this time to witness the mettle of my brothers and leave myself open to those who may inspire me with their conviction and leadership.

QUOTE(Ferro @ Jan 23 2018, 07:52 PM) *
My turn!

To all standing:
What qualities do YOU look for in a leader and what is YOUR definition of cowardice?

Not everyone has the ability to stand and fight (some of us can't even hit anything.......) and to me, that's not a show of bravery. I want to know what you all think is.

Kiwi

Honesty in entreating with those they meet and their brothers.

Compassion in dealing with those in need and those they face.

Wisdom to think clearly and understand there are consequences to actions and to act blindly and without thought can be more dangerous and create far wider repercussions.

Decisiveness to act as needed with clear intent and understanding to the purpose of their actions.

Virtue to embody the order and the virtues of the Knights and to lift us up by their actions.

Cowardice, is fleeing when you can do something, failing to stand up or act because you are afraid of the danger it may bring to yourself directly or at another time, abandoning the oath and those we swear to defend when we take it.

QUOTE(BlockWizard @ Jan 23 2018, 08:00 PM) *
I'd like to ask something-

Is a truly brave act carried out fearlessly, or in spite of one's fear?

Thank you,
Lord Zacharius Ward

The bravest are those that feel fear who act despite their fear, doubt or the terror that plague them, the mother than stands before the rabid wolf and her new born child with nothing but bare hands.

The fearless can be brave but equally they can be foolhardy and reckless.

Just because we as an order cannot be afeared from the battlefield does not mean we do not hold our own fears in our hearts.

QUOTE(Trickyz @ Jan 23 2018, 09:06 PM) *
To all candidates,

My questions are:

Are you light of heart, dark of heart or in between?

Please rank in order of importance the following: the law, the life of a peon, the land, your own vitae?

Do you believe a mission for the greater good of the Empire is more important than the life of a peon or not?

Thanks

Rangar

I believe I am a good man and my heart and spirit are one the spirts would ajudge to be light.

Your question in requesting a rank is without context and as such can be interpreted in many ways and will differ from situation to situation, there is no definitive order to which I can affirm would always be so.

All I can confirm is this, each life of the common folk is sacred and worth saving and not be treated as a value to be spent or weighed against nor sacrificed because it is more difficult or dangerous to us to take a different approach.

The law can be an important shield that protects and grants sanctuary, equally it can be used by those with power to twist the world to their desires. This will vary from land to land in some it is to be upheld in others to be challenged even overthrown.

The land itself as a place is nothing without the lives that enrich it. To save a world but doom the lives that would dwell there is to read the oath and not understand it.

As to my Vitae it is inconsequential I have given of myself willing more times than I was felled in my first life alone well before mercenaries sacrificed their vitae in the commonplace rituals and rites now that are held among many of our caste. I have in the past surrounded by my brothers given myself to destruction to return a long dead fallen champion such that they may do what I could not with the belief it would be my eternal end. I was blessed that it was not but I gave myself without question.

However we do have a duty to not be mindless it is a gift and should be treated with respect a fight were a brothers is lost is a dark time and should not be expected as a normal occurrence.

We go to dangerous places, we tackle dangerous foes but there will be more and foolishly falling today means there could be no one to stand tomorrow.

QUOTE(Onasuma @ Jan 23 2018, 09:36 PM) *
Alright, while we're going:

If you were founding the Knights for the first time, which groups would you bar from joining?

Tobius

No one. No group.

I would have each and every Knight take their oath before Imrazil himself after they had spent time learning and speaking with him directly and were truly aware of what the oath truly means and how that oath binds us together as an order that believes in it.

It is my belief that only those that can be true to the oath would be able to swear under Imrazil’s gaze.

Those that are true to the oath and thus the order are Knights and it does not matter to whom they are judged by others to have belonged to or be a part of.

Thank you for the space to ask questions of our candidates.

As an order we have a choice: to be seen to be elite, and risk being aloof... or to be seen to be ‘of the people’ and broad based in our membership, morals, values and calibre; and lose distinctive quality. How would you navigate this choice, and how would you develop how our order is seen by others?

My thanks

Another excellent question, I believe the best way to deal it is to apply the following

Tai threat assessment:

Qualify as a threat?
Understand the danger
Assess the risk
Deliver deadly action
