Allies,

I have a matter that I hope you and your allies can help with. It is a strange situation and one that I have spent the last 16 years of my life preparing for.

Twenty seven years ago I was a fairly successful mercenary, I completed a large amount of work in and around the Scarlene area with a group of friends. During one summer we were at working in the barony of Coreth, staying at a hunting lodge for a few days to defeat a powerful necromancer.

On the final night things went terribly wrong, three of our group were dead, then been raised as undead, the other half were nearly out of everything and struggling to hold back the undead hoard. I got separated from the group, driven out in to the woods, my leg got broken and more undead approached. I knew my time was up, I am not a religious man but I looked to the sky and begged for help, both to save me and save my friends who I could see slowly being killed.

Out of the darkness stepped a black skinned demon and threw back the undead with a wave of his hand then turned to me and said “Cedric, you stand now on the brink of death. I offer you now a chance to save not only yourself but your friends as well. I can grant you healing, strength and power to fight back against the dead. As you would expect, such things do not come without a cost. In exchange, upon your final death, I will claim your soul. Time is short, decide now if you wish to be the hero and savoir, or if you wish to die here alone as your friends fall one by one.”

I was young, reckless and had the chance to save my friends, which is what drove me accept his offer. As we shook on it my wounds all healed, a strength and power flowed through my limbs that I had never felt before, it felt good, I killed the undead nearest me but as they fell the power turned to anger, with each death I lost a little more control. As I entered the courtyard the red mist had completely clouded my senses, I was unable to spot friend from foe and with the demonic power now uncontrolled inside me there was nothing they could do to stop me. I killed them all. I couldn’t stop myself. As the sun rose I killed the last undead and collapsed to the floor in exhaustion, but barely hurt.

I laid there in shock for a while, this was not what I had agreed, this was not what I wanted. A local priest came by and restored them to life. I stayed for a while apologised and tried to make amends but I just didn’t feel like I belonged with them anymore. I hadn’t myself in to the local magistrate to face my fate, death, but not destruction, plus a decade in jail. I willingly accepted it.

Years passed, I was angry at myself for being so foolish and accepting the deal. Bitter that I had been tricked by the demon. Scrying confirmed by soul was still bound by the pact and upon my death it would be drawn to their hell by Rawval, The Soul Collector.

I spent years researching who these demons were, what they were doing with the souls and how they go about collecting them. I have produced a detailed report for yourselves and will provide you a copy under separate cover.

During this investigation and research I came across a ritual that will bind my soul to Primus, leaving it lingering here rather than being dragged to the demon.

The time has come for me to pass on, I am old and am ready to embrace my final death. However, I hope that you could help, be by my side when I die to protect my soul and deal with Rawval when he arrives.

I also have set aside 75,000 Grulls, I would like to hire you after my death to complete my work. The report is all that I have been able to find out from scrying and investigation, it is now at the point that more direct action and travel to their realm will be needed. There are souls of priests of both Talthar and St Michael trapped there, so the offer is open to those faiths as well.

If you are willing to help then please meet me at my house in Farnford on the outskirts of Scarlene. I haven’t got long left but should have all my affairs in order by the 16th of next month.

Cedric Velvent

The Demonic Collection and Consumption of Souls

By Cedric Velvent

What is a Soul?
The true nature of a soul is hard to define, all living beings have them but they vary greatly. Many use the word spirit and soul interchangeably, but they are different. Elves, Fey and the like have no spirit but have a soul.
The best way to explain a soul is the collection of sentience that makes an intelligent creature unique. They require a host to have any true presence in the mortal realm and it is believed that there are a far greater number of souls that reside in the heavens and hells then there are at any point on Primus.
When a person is reborn it is their soul taken on a new physical form, much of the knowledge and memories are however lost in the process and it can cause very large changes in peoples nature.

Demon’s Interest in Souls.
The concept of demon’s collecting, consuming or trading souls is fairly well known. Many of the mercenary caste have seen it first hand but even the common folks have heard tales of people selling there soul or sacrificing people for power.
Many different demon orders deal with them in different ways, the most common way they gain power from them is by consuming them, gaining strength and power from them. The more powerful the owner of the soul was the more power the demon can consume from it. This power does not seem to last indefinitely, seeming to slowly fade over time
Other demons seem to gain power from the corruption of a soul. They tend to aim for a goodly soul and slowly twist and corrupt it until it turns dark. The souls of angels are their primary targets for this.
The third group that has come to my attention and very little has been previously documented about them. They store the souls in a crystal that has been crafted for just such a purpose. This crystal seems to have the effect of either amplifying there power if bound to a wand or similar focus. I have also seen one example of it bound to a shield to dampen the effects of incoming powers.

The collection of Souls
Once again there are very different methods for collecting souls, some much more hands on then others. Many demons have soul jars that they use for transporting souls or rituals placed upon a person when they are alive that will send their soul to the relevant demonic hell when they die.
Specific sacrifices are usually combined with a ritual that will draw the attention of a specific demon that will then be able to draw that soul to hell.
There are also demons who steal souls, they travel to places to kill them and collect there soul for their own use.

The Union of the Condemned
There are a specific order of demons called the Union of the Condemned that have a low level observation ritual over much of Primus that seek out those people who are in desperate need in a situation a few minutes from death. Often in these time people beg for any help they can get, the ritual finds this and makes the demons aware. They then send along a negotiator, someone to barter with the person for their soul in exchange for a way to survive their current situation.
These negotiations are often twisted deliberately in the demons favour or they stick to the letter of the deal rather than the spirit. It was one of these who visited me. They seemed to a number of souls over the last 30 or so years, aiming particularly for goodly mercenaries.
They live in a shadow demonic realm, finding anything out about it has been particularly difficult, the place is unsurprisingly shielded from scrying from the outside. From what I do know there are 4 different types of demons that all work together to find, collect and then bind the souls to crystals.
From capturing one of the demons I have been able to find a location to which the demons portals come from, othe people would be able to travel through these as well.
It is likely that once there you would be able to scry more about that place and potentially find information linking to the ritual they have active over Primus, the crystals they have, and the souls they have already collected or are due to collect.

I'll come help if I can, but my time's not really my own, so no promises.
