The Circle reports that four Ritter Drachyul working in the Kasnian marshes to oppose the tyranny of the hedge dragon cults, who had recently sent undead to attack nearby villages, have been slain in suspicious circumstances. When their bodies were recovered Circle seers reported that the four had been talking to a group of mercenaries from the north, including Lord Victor Somas, member of the Church of Mortai and the 32nd best ranger on Primus. Apparently conversation was pleasant for around ten minutes and the Ritter had permitted them to pass on through the lands, while warning them on the dangers ahead. As the group moved off one of their number shouted a dark word invoking the wrath of some kind of Balrog and they felt their undead spirits leave them. Having ascertained that the Ritter weren't derelict in their duty and were undoubtedly loyal their bodies were passed on for reanimation.

The Circle is pleased to report that through the executions of twenty hedge prisoners and their blood the four Ritter are now once again able to perform their duty. The Circle wishes to speak immediately to the Senator for Foreign Affairs to ensure that this kind of action remains an isolated incident. There is a growing movement that wishes to ban the Church of Mortai from the South. This voice has been amplified by scrying that reveals not only did they slay the Ritter, but also worked to aid the hedge dragon cults.

In their defence the undead threat to nearby villages seems to have subsided. The two local Barons are divided as to what course of action to press the Circle into taking; one Baron, Foresight, seems to be supporting the northern mercenaries and stating that the incident with the Ritter was clearly a misunderstanding or some act of subterfuge by those leading the undead armies; the other Baron Hadrien is seeking to ban northern mercenaries entirely, and has already done so on his lands. He has offered a bounty of 800g for the heads of any of the northern mercenaries involved and a further 20,000g if the hedge cult of the Scarlet Skies can be successfully eliminated from his lands. Baron Foresight has widely denounced these offers of payment and seems set to invade Baron Hadrien's lands and take them by force of Marcher-law.
