A report from a young Mercenary:

QUOTE
Several mercenaries were hired by The Gatherer to perform some favours for several "place" spirits. The first of these was to acquire a rare orchid from atop a waterfall, which we traveled quickly to deal with.

At the waterfall were mischievous water elementals which tried to push us back down the way we came. We were occasionally washed back down the falls by torrents of water. After some time and much destruction of these watery summonations, we reached the top where we found and picked the orchid. On going to pass it down to the waiting wizard below, we realised that it would be difficult to return with even more waiting elementals. We decided to jump down, and the wizard amongst us was able to save us from the fall.

Next we traveled to the previous lands of the river clan. The chieftain of this tribe had disappeared but the orcs were still there. We slew the first pair of orcs we met, however the next group we met had a pet troll. This encouraged us to discus matters with them. It transpired that they had been preying on nearby fish, which had been what had angered the "place" spirit. The orc refused to stop because his troll needed to be fed, so... in a break down in diplomacy, we killed the orc and troll as well. However as we advanced we were ambushed by two sneaky orcs, armed with venom. These managed to poison several of us, and one of our number was killed. Thankfully, they proved to be less powerful in open combat and were easily slain. There were no more orcs left in the river clan after that. One less things to worry about I suppose...

Next we were forced to solve several puzzles to collect the prize; the legendary Fish Totem. To do this we had to first find five keys, then unlock five boxes, and solve five riddles. The biggest problem occurred when it became apparent that the keys were protected with traps. Despite this we were able to acquire the keys, and as a result open the boxes. The riddles proved to be more of a challenge. We were eventually able to solve them and the wizard, Frist, acquired the legendary Fish Totem.

In the afternoon, we were hired by Lathaniel to investigate the Hollow Bone tribe, where goblins were been said to be disappearing. We found several goblins selling their wares, but one was a swindler who double-crossed us and tried to kill one of our number. He was easily slain by our warrior. After our priest - who had been rendered unconscious in the fight - had been healed by a nearby goblin, we found a young goblin whose father had been killed. The warrior was able to discern that the fey-lords were close to primus here, and that they were watching down. Expecting this to be the cause of the mysterious disappearances, we ventured onwards. We soon found two fey, who claimed that they had been sent to primus by accident, and knew not how to return. We moved past them and found that another fey was sitting beyond.

He was sitting down and claimed that he had come to take the totemic power from the tribe. We found out that he was physically weak, but he could only be harmed via the theft of his hat, and then wearing the hat. His blows struck through armour and even through a shield. This made it difficult for us to fight him. We were able to find out that he came through a portal at the base of a tree. We tried to steal his hat but were unable, and when we returned we found him gone. We then found a man there who was near a tunnel. When the tunnel was entered, the person who entered it was frozen. There were, of course, rumours of a ghoul in the tunnel. One of the mercenaries - a begger - offended the man, and was slain, as he was able to coat a blade in poisonous ichor merely by licking it. They were unable to enter the tunnel due to the freezing line, and were forced to go home.

A typical day for the Young Mercenaries of the Empire.
