Sara Stonehaven sat at the dining table in her family mansion and enjoyed her first proper meal in over a month. Juices dripped down her chin as she tore into the meal placed in front of her by invisible servants. Kidneys, liver and heart, all bursting with flavour, she had never known a meal like it, nor enjoyed anything more in her short life. It was a meal she knew she deserved, and she relished every mouthful of it. And as she ate...no, devoured the meal, she felt vitality and power flow into her accompanied by waves of pleasure that she knew wrought changes deep within her. Her new life had truly begun, and the village of Stonehaven would never be quite the same again.

George Ruthwaite walked down the street in Deci, his weary gait made the smile on his face seem a little incongruous. But he had finished another days work and was on his way home to his beloved daughters. Everything he did was for them, and his favourite time of the day was the precious few hours he got to spend with them in the evening, before collapsing into his bed to begin the cycle again. But their smiles, their bright future, the chance that they could all escape this city one day, these things were why the hours he worked, the sacrifices he made, were all worthwhile.
His smile suddenly faded then disappeared entirely, as a searing pain ripped through his stomach. His first thought was what had he eaten for lunch...but then the pain grew so severe that conscious thought was no longer possible. He collapsed in the middle of a busy thoroughfare, forcing the denizens of Deci to walk around his prone form, scowling at the inconvenience.
But even the hardened citizens of this city paused and watched in stunned disbelief as he began to scream, and a sullen green glow encased his form. The screaming stopped abruptly, and the flesh melted from his body, quickly forming puddles of brown and red sludge around his form. In less than a minute, nothing remained of him other than a skeleton.
The crowd that had formed swiftly dispersed as the skeleton began to twitch. And by the time it stood under its own volition and its eye sockets began to glow with an unholy light, few remained to bear witness. The skeleton tilted its head for a moment, then began to run. It moved at a steady pace until it had left the city far behind, following a call only it could hear.
The man was swiftly forgotten, a tale that swept through the taverns of the city, but only until something else of note happened in a city that was more than used to the unusual. Only two young girls remembered George Ruthwaite, and they themselves would soon be swallowed up by the unforgiving city and be forgotten.

A pleasant fairy tale sweeps across the land. A tale of a group of mercenaries gathering to aid the folk of the village of Stonehaven. And of how this diverse group, gathered from the length and breadth of Primus, all agreed to waive their pay for a hard days work. This selfless act surely could not be true, and yet the tales persisted and grew. Perhaps other mercenaries would do likewise for those in true need...or perhaps not!

*notices posted around the settlements in and around the Brandins*

It is with regret that we announce the passing of Tobias Stonehaven. He is survived by his loving children, Jeremiah and Sara. There will be a small memorial service for the family over the coming days.

We ask those who trade with our town to please be patient in the short term. This has been a time of considerable disturbance for our normally peaceful town. But we expect to be able to resume our commitments in a month or so.

And to those mercenaries who provided considerable aid to us recently. House Stonehaven remembers our friends, and honours our debts. We will do right by you for the understanding you showed in our time of need. We will be in contact as soon as we are fully back on our feet.

*jointly signed*

Jeremiah and Sara Stoneheart

For those who listen out for news relating to the Brandins, or specifically the village of Stonehaven, the following rumours are becoming quite widespread.

1) A rare and valuable vein of mithril ore has been discovered deep within the Stonehaven mines. It awaits verification, both of its purity and how large a vein it may be. But already the mere rumours have done much to re-populate the town.

2) Several settlements near the Brandins have been subjected to nocturnal raids. A handful of villagers have disappeared without a trace, most often from isolated farmsteads and the like. The village of Stonehaven has not been subject to these raids.

3) A "tribe" of undead have been growing in power deep within the Brandins. Led by an undead orc shaman, they have wiped out several other smaller tribes and their banner sewn of flesh and bone is spoken of in fearful whispers.

4) Several mining settlements throughout the area have reported thefts of large quantities of good quality stone. The reports are always the same, they happen overnight, shipments that were due to be delivered to a variety of customers have just vanished. Nothing is seen of who was responsible, deep tracks as of a large number of wagons are seen heading north, but mysteriously and suddenly vanish after but a few miles of travel.

Cheers,

Sean

((Next instalment is on the 28th January, a brief will come out a couple of weeks before. All welcome, whether you did the first part or not. More info about the campaign can be found in the "It's about time" sub forum))
