Alguz was surrounded by dark elves; fear and confusion spreading throughout the streets. People were asking questions and the local militia, who had no answers, were adding fuel to the fire with their lack of answers.

Why was Deci attacking Alguz?

Couldn’t the empire stop the evil that was Deci from doing such things?

These were just a couple of the questions spreading with fear throughout the city. It was only after Aven and Thor were seen leaving the cathedral with a mass of their faithful that people started to calm down, confident in their church and that He who is Justice would solve the issue.

As the Church of Talthar went forth, accompanied by a St Michael priest who was said to be seen amongst them, the city started to calm as they had faith in the churches of light.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The battle raged outside the city. The screams of the dying was terrible to hear; tents were consumed in flames, and there were bodies of demons and undead everywhere. Amongst the bodies were many dark elves, just lying there, none had turned to pools of darkness like a normal elf.
Soon injured troops were returning to the city, talking of mighty battles, all talk of Deci gone. The priests who were tending to the injured were telling them that the attack had come from the church of the Destroyer and the old enemy Malice working in concert.
Meanwhile scholars were recounting battles the Church of Talthar had had with the old enemy Malice and these tales of victory calmed the injured and the stories soon spread as did the hope and certainty the Talthar would win again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The corpses were piled high when the Church of Talthar finally got to the war altar of the Destroyer. It's vampiric nature had been feeding on the souls of the city for days and even the local tribes had been raided by men in red with yellow eyes on their tabards. With faith and steel, the Talthari overcame the forces of Malice and Destruction.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The battle raged on outside the city. Meanwhile a group of injured soldiers staggered into Alguz, but whilst the priest was busy looking after the troops they all slipped away. Dropping the stolen tabards and replacing them with the black of their God they moved silently into the cathedral.
Deep within they moved, spreading out through the large building, easily avoiding the priests. They then started on their rites, their plan not to destroy the Talthari but to weaken the cathedral and break the faith throughout the Empire. With these rites in place they moved to the cloisters, left empty with all the faithful fighting outside the city.
Two dark elves opened black bags and pulled out several large black poles, setting them up in the large chamber; they started their rites. Thick, almost solid darkness enveloped the poles, flowing between them, almost alive in its movement. Then suddenly they stopped, and troops started to come through the portal, soon followed by large floating wooden boards, over flowing with corpses.
Red robed priests, the only humans here, started the prayers of necromancy raising all the corpses to unlife. The Umbra took command and moved the undead out.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Talthari returned to the cathedral all looking tired but determined. It seemed to the troops outside that although the battle outside the walls was over there was still more to do.
The city militia went to enter the cathedral to help but angels guarding the temple politely refused then access, saying the faithful led by He who is Justice would deal with it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The darkness came from nowhere, surrounded Alguz and slowly rolled across the city walls, closing in on the cathedral. Smaller buildings like taverns, schools and barracks all crumbled into rubble and dust as the darkness passed over the city. Anyone caught in it died suddenly and then staggered to their feet; corpses under the control of the darkness.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The darkness moved ever closer to the cathedral. Towards the end of the day it reached the building and slithered all over the walls and windows. The whole building and grounds were now enveloped, and no one could see inside.

To the on lookers outside the darkness remained for what seemed like hours. Then suddenly, just after the eighteenth hour there was a blaze of light and the darkness shattered, gone as if it were never there, the cathedral looking as if it had never been touched.

Soon after people started leaving the cathedral, but only to gather the dead.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In the days that followed many priests were seen gathering the dead and returning them to the cathedral. City militia and Talthari troops together moved through the city, restoring order and calming the populace.
Aven moved outside and in the morning, light led the city in prayer giving thanks to Talthar for their deliverance from evil. He also promised aid to the city and promised the Governor Galdor anything he may need to rebuild Alguz. He also gave thanks to the church of St Michael and to the priest Penny who were instrumental in helping the church in their time of need.
Then came the funeral of Gravain, Champion of Elbrime. It was a solemn occasion with people coming from all over the empire with many faiths also present. The service was led by Galdor, one of his oldest friends and people reported they could see the tears in his eyes as he gave the sermon, extolling the virtues of Gravain’s life.
Extract from the sermon given by Governor Galdor, and repeated throughout the City by the criers.
Brother and Sisters. My Friends.
Many of you would have heard the tales of the happenings over the last weekend. You will have seen with your own eyes many horrors and will have been touched by the destruction and despair brought to this city.
Let me tell you this my brothers and sisters, again we have stood together and have overcome what has been thrown at us. I am proud of you all for showing the Hope that we are renowned for, for keeping that Hope in your hearts when despair and destruction was all around you.
You know that I cannot bring back the friends and loved ones we have lost to this attack on our freedom but, I promise you this, through the continued vigilance of the faithful and through my own governance, I will ensure that we will renew the physical structures which have been lost and continue to make Alguz a beacon of Hope for all people; be they Imperial or Tribal; Human, Elf, Dwarf, or whoever.
If a visitor brings no ill will, and has hope in their heart, they are always welcome as has always been the Algen way.
If a visitor brings ill will, let them know that they will find a strong city, steeped in history, pride and Hope. They will not divide us, for we are of Alguz; City and Wild; Imperial and Tribal; and we will always stand in unity against that which seeks to break us apart.
