Jasper, I re-read my post and I referred to LARP groups rather than LRP groups....I feel so dirty! What am I turning into?

Unfortunately if you get a group of LRP systems together to agree on safety aspects then the only way to come to an agreement would be to take the most onerous approach in each case. No one group is likely to be prepared to relax their chosen safety precautions for any individual aspect of the hobby.

This would quickly lead to the use of USA style "boffer" weapons, the wearing of eye protection for everyone, boxing gloves for monks, disclaimers being signed for each event you take part in, missile weapon proficiency tests for each event, minimum standards of acceptable footwear, etc etc

We are spending more and more time getting to know other systems and the people that run them, and its fair to say that there is a huge range of experience levels there. As with most LRPers they each hold strong opinions as to the validity of their own safety records and policies.

We have spent a significant amount of time at Labyrinthe looking at safety, risk assessments and insurance policies. There is a shared insurance policy out there and available for LRP, but its not appropriate for Labyrinthe as it only covers a very limited number of events per year and doesn't provide sufficient cover.

The insurance policy we have in place is comprehensive and represents a considerable annual financial investment (its our second highest fixed costs after premesis). It does, however, allow us the freedom we were looking for to be able to adopt a common sense approach wherever possible. We're very keen to be able to keep this approach as it provides you all with the widest possible choices - and we still have an enviable safety record, probably better than many other systems despite Labyrinthe being combat heavy and in an environment which presents its own challenges.

Serious answer:

1) How much would this cost?
2) How much work would it be to put into practice?
3) What would it change?
4) Who would it benefit?

I suspect the answers are "more than many LRP clubs could afford", "More than many LRP clubs have time for", "Not a huge amount in practice" and "Lawyers".

All of which are excellent reasons not to bother. You have to remember that whilst Labyrinthe is big and organised and professional, there are a whole lot of LRP groups out there being run on a shoestring by enthusiastic amateurs, who might just give up if they had to fill in forms, sign up to deadlines and run the risk of having writs waved in their faces if they don't.

Plus on general principles I oppose pointless legislation that exists only to stick money in the pockets of greedy commercial lawyers, intent on infatilising the population into a state of terrified, risk-averse herd-mindedness.

Actually, I just object to commercial lawyers full stop.

I think it comes down to 2 words Matt

Common Sense

We have managed on that premise for 20+ years. You could probably take any of the very few accidents over that time, annalyse them and come up with a result that was "someone didnt show common sense" (sprinting in the dark, not ducking when going throough a tunnel etc. etc)

Life is being ruined for everyone by both the PC brigade and the H&S brigade (You do know that our special forces soldiers are not allowed to change light bulbs in their own rooms as it is a H&S risk?)

Exactly, most people are safe, those who are not usually get disciplined or whatever in some way or another. Everythings fine as it is....

We dont all need to be wrapped in wool cloth and given a 100 page manual on the correct way to pull your arm back as you hit someone with a foam stick.

Procrastination FTL
Common sense FTW

This whole politically correct 'for dummies' culture is infuriating, takes all the fun out of life!

Really silly topic with far too many pointless walls of text,

Wow... Seriously?!
Stupid Health and Safety...

But it would cost a lot and be of little to no benefit... All systems are different and will remain so... There are some systems that allow stabbing for example (WIth special weapons though) when we wouldnt dream of it.

Rob

do not get me started on that one, last Wednesday sports afternoon for all the soldiers was cancelled as it was to hot! As was PT on Thursday for the same reason. However my 8 year old son managed to play cricket ALL day in a competition without dying strange eh!

Also it was ironic as some of the soldiers actually go swimming for sports, and instead we they had extra time in the classroom where I had to teach 15 of them in a small classroom without Air Con and one small fan!

Logic.... Sense?

I do not think so!

H&S??? You should see all the antibacterial hand sanitiser gel dispensers that appeared all over my school this week.

Naturally no students smeared them all over each other.... no no.

Enough has been said on the orginal topic but just a couple of things off-topic .

Believe me the last thing I would want - speaking as a commercial lawyer of sorts - would be to cause the L(A)RP hobby to fund commercial lawyers.

I would not count myself a member of the H&S brigade and I doubt anyone who even vaguely knew me would count me as a member of the PC brigade.

[RANT] And speaking as someone who knows a LOT of commercial lawyers, I have to say that they tend to be just as despairing as the general population at the stupid decisions that are sometimes made in the name of health & safety or human rights or whatever... very few of which are actually mandated by law, and most of which (at least the really awful ones) come down to someone with no legal training (or limited at best) making a ridiculous decision based on pure ignorance and the worst possible assumption of what a particular law might be read as meaning. And don't get me started on "data protection"!!!

There's a lot more room for common sense in the actual law than you might think; it tends to be decision-makers at very low levels (not even judges of any description) who make a total mess of things and blame it on the law when they should be blaming it on their own mediocrity.[/RANT]

BTW this is not intended as a political post, so apologies if anyone discerns any political points as that is not the intention. I'm just saying don't heap it all on the law and the lawyers!

DAMN YOU, you have revealed my evil plan! From now on lights will be kept on in the caves at all times and players are restricted to moving at zombie speed for safety purposes. Weapon blows are still allowed provided that they are only struck to an agreed location (i.e. agreed between the two combatants and the referee before each blow is struck) and also at zombie speed. Further players will not be allowed to cross uneven surfaces* without a safety supervisor present to advise them of obstacles. Neon signs are to be erected near all low walls, pits, bridges and other features; we of the Totalitarian Welfare Association for Total Safety are quite sure that a suitable in-character explanation can be arrived at for all such signage [e.g. a local friendly ogre-mage has decided to enchant glowing signs to prevent his food hurting itself and slowing itself down before it reaches him, or even worse leaving to seek healing] and your suspension of disbelief will not be affected. All armour will be checked to ensure it does not weigh more than 3lb which could impede movement in cases of fire and weaponry will be limited to a maximum length of 24" (minimum of 12") for safety reasons. Spell verbals will also be simplified to avoid discriminating against persons who are unable (for reasons of memory, intellect, resources or time) to memorise them:- all verbals will now be "This is a spell verbal - I am now casting ..." [insert spell name here]. Priests will be removed from the system as they may offend atheists. Druids will be removed as they may offend practitioners of the druidic religion because their powers are non-spiritual in origin. However Forest Guardians are officially approved provided they wear rainbow colours as a sign of tolerance. "Warriors" will now be renamed "Peacemakers" and anyone playing a wizard will have to certify that they are not infringing any copyright relating to Harry Potter. Hail Brown!

* this includes any cave floors etc.

Happy Roleplaying!!

Mwahahahahahahahahahahaha

if there's bruises people need to take it easy,

if there's blood its dangerous.

if people think its too rough then they normally say something.

We're all adults

I can see what MattW might be getting at in that if there was some legal guidelines the there may be a way that the insurance could be lowered but in all honesty if there was a way to lower the cost of insurance i'm sure Mr Byatt would have found it by now considering his prodession lol

I wasn't actually ever really talking about setting legal guidelines or even harmonised safety standards - just institutionalised communication between L(A)RP groups, and the reason for institutionalising it simply being to make the results accessible to all and to keep it going. Anyway, this has been thoroughly aired! Must find Mitchell & Webb sketch!
