"Curses!" Oliver exclaimed, looking upon the shattered wheel of his cart. The rain was pelting down and the outer walls of Halgar were clearly a long way off. Some scattered corn lay in the road, rapidly dampening, though the cover seemed to have contained any more from spilling out.

"Who says 'curses!' any more? Use a proper swear word you fool." Edward eyed his companion wearily from underneath the waxen leather hood that dripped chilling rain from the rim, adding to the torrent of water that was already obscuring sensible vision. All around them was empty shrub land, boggy mires off each side of the rough track. The pothole that they had gone over at speed, subsequently ruining their wheel, was overflowing from the rain, brown murky waters mingling with the rest of the flood.

"We're going to have to use some of our stock to get going again! This trinket would have earned us a tidy profit once we reached the city. They don't grow on trees you know!" Rummaging in the cart, Oliver eventually pulled out a bag of assorted objects; candlesticks, necklaces, even a rusty bent old plate. Eventually he selected a bronze swan and touched it the the wheel. "Artefact do thy work". The swan crumbled to dust, but the spokes of the wheel snapped together, wood reforming into a solid circle. Taking another trinket, a fairly mouldy candlestick, Oliver did the same and with a heft of strength lifted the cart high enough that Edward was able to put the wheel back on, and thread a metal peg through to hold it in place.

"The state of these roads... it's getting worse and worse." Edward complained. "We pay our tithes! Don't the nobles around here care about their people?"

"It's not just here y'know, it's getting bad all over the place." Oliver retorted, swinging himself back up into the driving seat. Once Edward joined him he cracked the whip and the horses began to trot forward, the cart trundling behind them. "Anyway, we should make good time now."

A few minutes later, with another crash, the cart lurched to the left as the wheel once again shattered in a divot. There was a brief pause before a loud "F*ck!" raced through the muting rain.

"That's more like it Olly"

Across the Empire the transport of goods becomes increasingly challenging as the roads continue to deteriorate.
