26th Maii After the dust settles

Gorim raises an eyebrow at the human that bursts in. Starring into his tankard of 'holy water' as the man Doric.... Yes the one we brought back over Molly as we only had one scroll left. Looking up holds up a hand to stop the other new addition Charlie from rushing out the door.

"Mason! Is alive and well. A might beet up but mending. Saw it in my holy water. Moradin be praised!

Now that you're here let's get down to business"
------------------------

Lower your eyebrow Dwarf, I meant no offence.

So those poor people in the town can’t be saved but the cause of the problem has at least been removed. Now to cut deeper and find the root of the problem. Is Reverend working alone?

I won’t make any suggestions until I am up to speed with all you have to tell me.

Please, go on.
------------------------

The candles have been replaced, the talk is in hushed tones as the companions await the promised briefing. Complimentary refreshments sit on the side barely touched.
Gorim stands stiffly, dressed in travelling robes his armour nowhere to be seen, only his familiar hammer sits at his hip. In his hands is a leather bound book, parchments stick out at odd angles. He lays the book recently on the table and opens it to reveal the pages gathered over the course of the investigation. The book is full of tight script of dwarvish writing. Side notes and crossings out made here and there, rough diagrams too can be seen.

“For those of you that have just joined us, and for those that need to recap and collate our knowledge I will go over what has happened from the start.”

The dwarf takes a sip of holy water and begins

“The first we knew of the problem at hand was when we were called upon to help with a bandit problem in the lands to the east, known as the lands of Jade. It was the time of the New Year festival, this year was the celebration of the Goat. Ochi Tengari Imperial Festivities Organizer had called out to all mercenaries in the surrounding area. I had been travelling and so thought this would a good opportunity to get to know the area.

The message read:

Konnichiwa Mercenaries!

It is the turning of the year and we invite people of all cultures to revel in this year’s festivities set on by our most honourable Jade Emperor.

This year we celebrate the majesty of the Goat and have commandeered a goat farming village in the Yun Shi Province, two days south of the Imperial City. Our festivities however have ground to a halt due to Ronin activity and they will need dealing with before things can get underway.

For those Mercenaries attending, the Jade Emperor request that you direct your armour bills to him and will supply a freshly made batch of potion for your healing needs. He will also be paying 1500 grulls for the successful removal of these pesky Ronin. Please meet me in the Fest hall in the Jenai village in Yun Shi Province.

Ochi Tengari
Imperial Festivities Organiser

We were a group of eight. Two were local, Oriental I mean, names were difficult to understand one was Garn the other remained silent. Next came Serith Stormseed, he was Dragonkin warrior the first I had met. He traveled with another warrior both knights; I believe Lucas was his name. Aliissa was a Dark Alfar and a Forest Guardian. Darius was a warrior too and we shared a guild hall. Molly! Well you most of you met molly and this was her first outing away from the confines of the Red Tower. Then there was myself.
When we arrived we came across a bloody scene. Our contact had quaffed one of the potions meant for us, what he became was eating one of his fellows and then attacked us and was slain. Within the festive hall only one man remained alive. He had been driven quite insane and babbled in his own language. We found our potions but only a few of us took them (I did with the hope of having it examined).

This letter was on the body of the victim:

Notes for Mercenary Hire:

• Welcome foreign mercenaries with colloquial gestures, sigh Gaijin...
• Ensure that none present are outlawed in their homelands
• Inform them that there is an issue with local alchemical suppliers
• Send them to wetlands to check supply lines
• Inform them of possible Ronin incursions (least likely but better that they do the footwork, dirty Gaijin!)
• Try to pass them off with 1500 grulls, ah profits!

Items to have present upon hiring mercenaries:

• Silly Gaijin Hiring license
• Emperors Ambassadorial Seal (I still have this)
• Mercenary potion allowance (now gone bad and thrown)

We travelled to the Docks where we had been told the Ronin had taken over. There we found out that they were making locals disappear to be tested on. We came across supplies to be shipped to the baronies and here. Molly would have us destroy them, but I wanted evidence. In hindsight she was right, for on our return the boxes had gone.
We came upon a lab that had all sorts of specimens and notes. Some I will place here, the others at the end as they will mean nothing unless you are an alchemist.

Diary Notes:
28th Noveas:
I have been allotted as a councillor for this region, my charge is to collect Ronin from the area and begin working on a “legitimate” business front. This will take time, but I’m sure I can manage it. All I need is to craft the seed before creating chaos.
15th Deeber:
I have collected together a Ronin bandit community, I have divided them into two parts and allotted each a leader. One will be trained to become Bloodied Blades, I have need of well trained servants. I will keep them in my newly acquired fishing storage labs and tell them to keep the Eta in line. The other I will send to the wilds and allow them to keep up their favourite banditry, this will keep eyes away from my operations and firmly on them.
29th Deeber:
The Dawn is almost upon us, a messenger from a faction calling themselves the Dark Pheonix came to the leader of my Bandits, he was offered a large amount of money to work with them, but luckly he knows who rules this area and kept silent about us.
30th Deeber:
Seem I overestimated the Bandits loyalty, after an insurrection, the bandit Ronin now have a new leader and I have my first test subject. Looking forward to human trials.
12th Januar:
Human trials have gone well, over a dozen eta and low born are now transformed into wild beasts. The transformation seems to be a little on the slow side, taking anywhere from 2-4 days to incubate and then another 2-3 days to fully infect the host. Need to work on speed.
24th Januar:
Success! The infection now take no more than 1 hour to incubate and full infection takes hold in 20 mins after. The addition of the Ishmaic notes and the Barionial Documents helped no ends. Now to refine thie to all under 30 minutes and we have a viable chaos maker.
26th Januar:
10 minutes! From ingestion to infection in less than 10 mins... I couldn’t have dreamed of better and from an accident, now the catalyst I was looking for was simple healing drafts. I would never had guessed in a dozen lifetimes. So in one foul swoop I have a 10 minute catalyst and delivery system.
14th Febuar:
Having received a missive from our master, he has decreed that the system will be to integrate our agents amongst all the delivery systems across primus for the mercenary potion allowances and then to slowly (1 in every 100) infect the potions and delivery a massive blow to the mercenary community, thus allowing us to move parallel to this with other goals.
19th Febuar:
New year approaching, a perfect testing opportunity, large groups of people, potions spread amongst the Eta, and a first en-masse test. I can barely contain my excitement. I will tell my Bandit Ronin to step up attacks, and see if we can draw some mercenaries into the fold.

From the docks we followed the trail to the orchestrator of this foul plot. We faced many humans’ villagers that had been changed or were in the process. We had no idea what we had stumbled upon. Further in we came into contact with masked men one of which unarmed, the knights let go…… This too was a mistake we would not know until our return to the surface. Eventually we did battle with the mastermind of that area Sosen Genki and his minions which included what we know now as a TYPE 4 creature.

Hidden in the robes of Genki was this:

Sosen Genkai,
Your work with the advancement of the infection is commendable. Your documentation has been passed to all our other agents in Ishma, The Baronies and Labyrithia. Ensure that your Emperor is supplied with our new “ingredients” and I will inform the other to do the same with their countries leaders of state. Send thee of your best Blood Speakers to the imperial city and ensure they are give the correct passes to insinuate themselves into the delivery system. All other delivery system will have the same.
Once you are done with your work there I wish you to meet with me in Alguz, go to a place called the Desiccated Husk on a Watersday and tell the bar keep “everything is rosey” and he will send word to me that you have arrived. I will meet you four days from then at the same place. I owe you a drink at least for the work you have done and hopefully we can push forward with other concerns.

Demetry Constella

When we reached the surface all hell had broken loose with Ronin, villagers and others becoming infected. We had survived and now looked to get the Empire informed while we made our way back.
The news would have you believe we hid. But they never saw what we saw those days. We had fought to the end and Stormseed fell. I was able to revive him with a scroll from my church. Praise-be to Moradin. We began to search out other areas of corruption and soon we found what we sort.

You may have read this:

The New Years festivities were disrupted in the Yun Shi Province. The Jade Emperor had invited people from all walks of life to celebrate the arrival of the year of the Goat but as the celebrations were prepared the village honoured with hosting fell into chaos. Ronin bandits attacked the outlying trade routes, and mercenaries from around the world came to investigate.

Seen disappearing into a fishing storage shed, the Mercenaries disappeared for most of the day as chaos erupted in the village, with the very Eta turning to blood crazed, frothing madness, killing all in sight.

But where were the mercenaries? People were brought together and offered herbal remedies for the potential infection, but shortly after the congregation turns to madness as more people turned into crazed killers.

Are potions to blame for this, a bad crop perhaps? Purposeful mix of healing potion and something sinister?

Late in the day the Mercenaries once again emerged, blood soaked and a little scared of what was going on. They pressed on and found the conductor of the orchestral horror scene.

With the alchemist taken care of and his laboratory destroy that should be the end of it....right?

Here is a copy of said letter:

To High Priest Ashalan .
From Gorim Lothorsson . Novice of Moradin.

My Lord,
I send this in haste as I believe that time is short. My name is Gorim Lothorsson, a Dwarven novice of Moradin. Journeying to lands of Primus these past few months.

Starsday 21st of Februar found me in the far eastern lands of Jade. The request had come from one “Ochi Tengari” an Imperial Festivities Organizer of the Jade Emperor. There was to be a celebration to bring in the year of the Goat. I was to travel to the Yun Shi province which is two days south of the Imperial City. (Four days from my location at the time) It would seem that they had bandit trouble and asked all to help.

Upon arrival at the village we were confronted by a grisly scene. At first glance it looked as if a man had collapsed and another was tending to him. But as soon as we entered, the kneeling man turned and rushed us. His face was covered in blood and gore. In his hands were the innards of his victim. This man... This Creature raged like an animal gone mad. I might add that he was not undead or cursed and after questioning the sole survivor we found that the man had been normal up until only moments before and the only thing he had done was to drink one of the healing drafts left for us. (I have kept samples for better people than I to inspect). The survivor was too traumatized for more questions and there was nothing the corpses could tell us, for we dispatched the mad man in self defense.

An investigation found documents that spoke of “trying to fool us Ga-gin” into doing their dirty-work for a half fee, but I digress. It also hinted that the potions were tampered with, then gave clues that led us to a fish storage.

Within the storage unit we found Ronin (Bandits) that had villagers chained up in different stages of insanity and rage. The bandits could not answer our questions and soon threw their lives away by attacking us. Still no disease seemed present and the only curse resided on a spirit I released. Through secret passages we located an alchemists laboratory with tools and notes. Some were in the script of Ishma others of the baronies and the Empire. Below I quote a fragment of the papers I bring back with me.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

24th Januar
Success! The infection now takes no more than one hour to incubate and full infection takes hold twenty minutes after.

26thg Januar
Ten minutes! From ingestion to infection in less than 10 mins. I couldn't have dreamed of better results and from an accident too. The catalyst I was looking for was simple healing drafts.

14th Febuar
The Master has decreed that the system will be to integrate our agents among all delivery systems across Primus for the Mercenary Potion Allowance and then to slowly (1 in every 100) infect the potions and deliver a massive blow to the mercenary community, thus allowing us to continue with our goals.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Upon dealing with the alchemist and the blood magics and creatures at his hands, we came across a letter from one “Demetry Constella”. It stated that documentation has been sent to agents in Ishma, the Baronies and the Empire as well as Striking out at the Jade Emperor. I fear we may be too late even now.

Furthermore he writes that they should meet in Alguz at a place I shall not name here... I intend to go there and follow the leads.

I humbly ask your leave to continue my investigations and ask that we increase our production of healing remedies as I believe that soon the potions granted us will become the source of woe.

I know we sit apart from the Empire when it comes to politics but I urge you to take head of this. If not dealt with soon the fires of chaos could take hold at our very doorstep. not to mention I feel that this is only a smoke screen to a deeper plot.

Yours
Gorim Lothorsson
Novice of Moradin

xxxxxxxxxx

(With that he lifts his tankard and drains it. Refills and places it on the table.)

Next to come was our journey to Sellaville on the 14th of Martius
Location: Shop, the Smoking Pestle.
I had received the following letter and went on to post for recruits that would fight for our cause.

Master Gorim Lothorsson,

I hope this day finds you well, I am Simone Justain, I work on behalf of a group of Alchemists called the Council of Mixers, we have become concerned about potential disaster for potion making across Primus, and came across your missive about finding a potential source of the problem.
I feel that we can be of service to each other, as I have a few leads to interesting goings on here in the Empire in a similar manner to which you found in the East.
I have two tasks to request of you, should you be interested, one is of service to the Council, to increase our supplies and the other is part of the investigation concerning the “infection”. The first service, along with standard imperial pay, comes with the supply of potions in the similar manner in which the imperial supply would normally give you, and I can assure you of their complete safety, as we use our on manufacture and ingredients and they are fully examined as opposed to the rushed manufacture and lacking quality control of the imperial suppliers.

Should you and any of your companions (I would suggest finding some if you have none) wish employment as above, please meet me at my shop, the Smoking Pestle, in Sellaville on the 14th Martius.

Yours,
Simone Justain
Council Merchant

Those that travelled back with me were Alessa and Molly. Monty (Gorim nods in his direction) and Loric the Paladin that now resides at the magistrate’s pleasure joined our party, along with Mason here who you have all met.
We Turned up at the shop and was ushered in by one Simone Justine of the Council of Mixers. She proceeded to tell us that crops vital to her shop were being stolen and she wished us to investigate and sort it out. What we found was Dark Alfar’s that they were under attack from Drowe elfs, some of which could harness psychic powers.
We fought our way through until we thought the threat defeated. More clues took us to the warehouse district where once again we found ourselves in a subterranean complex full of rabid zombie like creatures you faced off against the other day. A body found had penned in his own blood;

IF ANYONE SEES THIS SAVE MY MASTER GINEL WINTERHAVEN THEY HAVE TAKEN HIM BELOW.

Further we delved into the complex killing any infected we came across. Both Molly and Mason fell that day but were restored. In the very bowels of the labs we found uninfected peons and Ginel Winterhaven who we had to restrain for his own protection until we had cleared the area of the infected. That prudent course saved him that day but would lead to complications later, for we had no way of knowing that his blood would become a carrier of the infection. And yet he would not show any signs or symptoms.
In the main laboratory we found a simple young man called Gregory that had an uncanny grip on potion making. He was guarded by two human guards that on seeing us quaffed potions that turned them into the Type 4 “Brutes” you faced. Changing before our very eyes these creatures attacked, their metamorphosis took only moments. At the end of a bitter battle we walked out of there with peons and noble in tow, our comrades beside us or carried in our arms.

Gregory had written the following:

What Gregory did today 14th Martias 1015:
Woke up, sleepy today
Brushed teeth
Washed face and body
Eat breakfast, hmm oatmeal, my favourite!
Go to lab
Said hi to Dennis, he is a nice dog
Checked notes, they are a bit messy, I think the men went through them again
Washed flasks, got to be clean!
Checked delivery papers of newly arrived goods. Good Abd Al-Aziz signed it again, no signature would be bad.
Pulled bung out of barrel, stinking stuff from Ishma, spooned some into flasks.
Reverend Mellington arrived, he is nice to me
Helped me say prayers to the gods, he worships Flowers, but I don’t mind
Asked me to mix a mutagen today
Said it would make the men strong for lifting
I like to help, so I did it
Reverend Mellington left and I had lunch
Ham, Pickles and Bread, Very tasty
Back to work
Men came in to lab shouted at me again; I got scared and kept working
The men are alway mean to me, not like Reverend Mellington
Kept shouting but I stopped listening, they’ll go away eventually
They ran out, good!
Glad it’s quiet again
Something is going on upstairs, better keep busy
Maybe Reverend Mellington is back, I had better finish
People shouting at the door now
Men are telling me to hide
Lots of shouting and fighting outside
Better stop writing now, people coming in

The locals and noble were returned to the Simone at the shop to be looked after. Winterhaven soon took off on his own, his story has been covered by the press but in a nutshell he’s unwittingly spreading the infection.

That takes us to the present mission we were all on. The following papers were found:

Herr Constella,

I write to you today to investigate the progress your organisation has made on the steps to making the cure I have requested.

Your last missive stated that Gehalt had taken a downward decline in his condition and that you needed more supplies to stabilise his condition. I purchased for you 13 Herb Farms across eastern Labyrinthia and also the deeds to 4 Factories to speed up your production of the potions you require to experiment on Gehalt’s condition.

You requested the deeds, but until I see positive results of his increase in health at least up to how I sent him to you, I will retain them on my property.
I sent to you 3 squads of my knights to guard these properties, and this will make a total of 10 squads of soldier I have sent you.

But for all I give, I see little results, I haven’t heard of a break though in months.
I shall be sending a missive to your superiors and will be speaking to Prelate Fullion in person next month, when he visits my estate.

I await your response,

Ritter Viktor Fullenhensul
Lord of Fullenhensul Estates

And more importantly these:

15th Deeber:
I presented Gregory’s findings to Reverent Mellington, a poison that once ingested slowly changes the host with adaption’s to its surroundings. He seemed please, but said that the timing is an issue, too long means it can be noticed and a vaccine can be created and then effort is wasted. I will take the simpletons formula and try to improve upon it.
28th Deeber:
After some human testing, time spent on transformation is roughly 2 weeks, not fast enough! Mellington was right; this is a waste of time...
29th Deeber:
Last night it came to me, poisons take too long to be accepted into the body, I had to find something that the body would accept more readily, poisons are fought against, but more beneficial effects are instantaneous. So I will begin working the poison to instead work similar to a basic beneficial potion, similar to the sleep potions and such
10th Januar:
Extensive testing proves that the body happily converts the infection in General potions of most types, healing potions were considered but their general effect is too fast to allow the infection time to adapt, that will have to be research for another day. It seems that now we can get full transformation in under a week, dependant on the subject.
26th Januar:
Gods be damned! So cursed oriental alchemist has adapted MY formula so that the transformation time is now under an hour.... AN HOUR!!! What did I miss?
27th Januar:
Seems the foreigner acquired document from Ishma and the South. Why these were not made available to all of us is beyond me and more importantly why did we not acquire them first, we are meant to the “Primary” facility! And now to make things even worse he has adapted the infection into a healing draft, from my previous notes..... Why is this happening to me again!?!

12th Febuar:
Human trials have improve massively, we now have more that 20 infected peons and some of the first have started showing developments beyond the basics if the infection, classifications below:
Type 1 “Runner” – The basic infection in full, devoid of the natural state of self preservation, almost pure rage fuelling it, all it seems to want to do is destroy anything put in the cell with it. Any wound inflicted by this creature that involves saliva or blood contact, has similar effects to ingesting the formula. Note: Run tests on those with Vitea and Noble Blood.
Type 2 “Drooler” – This was the first of the mutations to emerge, if feel as an adaption to escape the metal bars we kept them caged with. They constantly secrete a caustic substance instead of normal saliva. They are able to project this substance up to 20 feet. Any test subject showing these signs are to be moved to the mineral cells.
Type 3 “Stalker” – This was the next adaption to appear, but I use this term loosely, the creatures after a time became adapt at blending in with their surroundings and develop a more cunning mental state. We lost a number of good guards finding and locating these after the first occurance.
Type 4 “Brute” – This development was most interesting, retaining the sheer viciousness of the basic specimen, but developing huge muscle mass and toughened skin. These would make excellent Vanguard, should these be viable so military use. Note: Have toughen Steel cells prepared.
Type 5 “Abomination” – This has been a unique development, this creature is tough beyond all normal measures of human development, immense regenerative properties, huge strength and extraordinary senses, however this subject lost its eyes in an escape attempt, one of the Lab assistants threw acid into its face in an attempt to stop it. This creature quickly became adept at breaking it cells, I will be required to build a containment facility specifically for it.

19th Febuar:
Finally finished the containment for Type 5, but the effort to get it in place required the replacement of the primary Lab to a newly excavated part of the deeper complex. Also because of the need for secrecy the supplies and metals used for the containment were substandard. Do the not realise how dangerous Type 5 is? But Mellington refused to compromise the lab secrecy for the quality I required. The chains should suffice for a few months, but the gears in the mechanism would not last as long with the constant work they are put though, perhaps spares should be stocked up on. Also the bars to hold the beast chained in place require personal to hold them in place until the chains are upon Type 5. Again more good people lost in the first few tests of this, but now the Lab assistants are more careful and stay silent until it is restrained.
27th Febuar:
Tests are going well, most test subjects are now developing at a good rate and our adaptions to their abilities have settled to a comfortable state. I would almost say things are going too well.
The alarm, maybe I spoke too soon, best go check and get things under control., I’m guessing some of the idiots think it’s funny to sound the alarm to spice things up, admittedly is has got boring of late.

Gorim looks at each of them. "I am drafting letters to be sent out to official of the Empire. The Inquisition, Lord Marcus Blunt and the Artanor as it is rumoured that they too entered the lab and may have found other info.” He pauses. “Look its late, get some refreshments and we can discuss the next step…..Mason you look like you have something to say?”

(OOC thanks for waiting)

It's with a gleeful grin that Charlie notices the jug of cream that has been left on the refreshment table; clearly whomever set the room had taken note of her rather unique tastes. Pouring herself a tankard, she offers the jug round before respectfully replacing it on the table, then she takes a seat beside Doric. Watching Gorim with an inquisitive stare as he speaks, she impatiently waits for him to finish before cutting in.

"Forgive me for speaking out of turn Mason, but this concerns me greatly. Is there nothing we can do for these infected? No potions or curatives we can use? Is any research being done into a cure? I feel like this should be of massive priority! We simply cannot give up on these people, if this were to get out, to infect more people? It would be horrific! We simply must get to work on a curative or at least something to slow it down. Maybe the process could be reversed?" She ponders out loud, glancing to Gorim, then the others.

"If there's a way to resolve this without further bloodshed, we owe it to these people, to Lady Shaehan and to ourselves to find it."

"From my communications I have found out that there is currently no cure and our best hopes for making one is to recapture G'nell Winterhaven and have him looked at by a skilled alchemist, who should be able to work out a cure". Mason replies, looking towards Charlie and the rest of the company.

"This is also the most time sensitive mission we have."

Gorim looks over at masons comment and withdraws a letter from his pocket.

"This is the communiqué I received before our last outing."

It reads:

Good Day Master Lothorsson,

I apologise for the delay in response, it has been a very busy week for me and yes it has been a prosperous one, many thanks. Gregory was fine whilst in my care, but we found some fair folk to look after him in the long term, I believe they live in the Halgar area. I am hoping the issues with the Demons there aren't a problem for them, but I am sure they are fine.
After reviewing the findings you brought to me, as well as the limited samples you provided, I have come to the conclusion that this "mixture" is infact a cleverly twisted potion, similar to a wooden horse and I would require a potionmaker of some skill to determine this on casual observation. However I would require more of the basic ingredients involved in the process of manufacture to unravel this potions mystery. If you can get more information on what i "in" this, we can begin in ernest.
Lord Winterhaven was in good health, or at least as good health as when you dropped him in my lap. He was insistent on getting home, but I suggested that he visit with family first so they could get him safely home, him living in the Halgar area also, demons and all. I heard the terrible news story, I do hope he is well.
I hope the potions we have been supplying you are up to your standards and I wish you well in your investigations

Simone Justine

Glancing between Gorim and Mason, Charlie nods once and reaches for her thick leather handbook. Pulling the book closer to herself, she flicks through the pages and skim reads a couple of miracles as she waits for someone else to speak. As no other answers are spoken she sighs then looks up to the group.

"Maybe I'm being silly, this tactical stuff is a bit beyond me. Why can't we just go get him then? I'm sure Shaehan would aid us in any quest to find this Winterhaven man. It doesn't even sound that hard. We could go now. I mean if we know where he is that is, do we know where he is?"
