Deci
With about four fifths the urban population of Halgar, Deci has a greater number of people within its walls than even Scarlene. Unlike the other great cities however Deci has a minimal number of citizens in the rural lands that abut and surround it. The imbalance is the result of both the city’s unusual growth and the thin, rocky land that surrounds it. Arguably the most famous of the Imperial Cities, Deci was actually the last of those possessed of such status to join the Empire and it was never part of any real Magiocracy, nor the Republic, despite the attempt in IM 452, or even the Principalities before that.

Little more than a village in the early days of the Second Age, Deci was successively attacked and taken over by brigands of every stripe. Within a century it was a town, one with ramshackle yet high walls and an extremely rough system of laws and justice based about various codes and traditions decided by the then Mocker Lord, Robber Baron, Mouse Lord, or one of a dozen titles invented by the current ruler. So far north as to be of little interest to the Heartland’s centralised societies elsewhere it prospered in population over succeeding centuries due to the arrival of more wolfsheads, attacks and settling by various tribes and even those exiled by the Princes and then the Republic. Indeed it was the latter that lead to the emergence of some kind of stability as the brigand leaders wed their daughters to those exiled holders of the Blood. Justice became harsher, more simplified and the old rule of the strong over the weak just took on the veneer of civilisation.

Nevertheless the city was not ruled by one person, nor even a single family. Rival groups assembled in a crude council and over the years each developed different areas of control and expertise in craft and trade as well as crime. It was not until IM 752 though that the city truly united, if only for a short time, when it was attacked and taken by the tribal hero Cavrin. Part of an uprising against the demands of Magiarch and the cities Cavrin used Deci as his base but in half a year his horde had been poisoned or lured away, his treasure was stolen and his people scattered and divided.

Even when House Amora was exiled by Glorianave it came to Deci and there prospered. Such a time though, the Magiarchal Wars, are the cause of much of the cities current woes. Refugees came to Deci by the thousand and by the time of the establishment of Empire the city had tripled in population, if not in actual geographical size. It had not only been swamped by those fleeing the result of the Magiarch’s conflict but had sustained less direct assault at the hands of the same. Where once it had been able to support itself through trade, raid and even some farming this was no longer possible and for a good fifty years now Deci has either been under the rot of famine or desperately fending it off.

Deci is very much a traditional fantasy city in the manner of Lankhmar and Sanctuary.

The People and the Land of Deci
Deci people are hard, wiry and have a foul reputation amongst those of other settlements. The rich and powerful are often fat whilst most everyone else is terribly gaunt as there is never, ever enough to eat. A hard city to grow up in the city does breed people able to take care of themselves and even in the best parts of town the culture is for people to gang together. It is of course a nonsense to say that everyone is a thief, a murderer or an assassin in Deci, the city simply would simply crawl up it's own arse and expire within ten years if this were the case but it is true to say that just about everyone is not adverse to such. Swiping a pie left out to cool or using a knife against the bigger man aren’t crimes to the citizens as much as they examples of good, plain common sense.

Much of the city is taken up with the West Quarter, more commonly known as Cheapside. Here there is little law other than that imposed by the Kallah or the stronger gangs. Almost exactly as the city once was in its earlier days, and often with about the same population, Cheapside is nearly a museum of the city's past. Here poverty and injury exceed those found in any other city for the division between rich and poor is nowhere more obvious than in Deci. But this seems to drive people on and it is true to say that more mercenary adventurers come from Deci than nigh on every other city put together.

Perhaps the most curious Quarter though is the Heights. Due to some local foible, natural or supernatural, the Quarter had collapsed into the catacombs below on no less than six separate occasions in the city’s history. Each time more of the settlements underbelly has been exposed to the open air and thereafter more buildings have been built on top. The result is that the Heights are as much a vertical Quarter as a horizontal one. The top most layers are home to the Nobility and the truly grandiose houses and buildings of the city, as the rebuilding meant that they were the newest in a city crowded and where land is at a premium. Below them though stretch the streets of a Quarter that goes up and down, rather than along. In place there are streets four or five levels below the city’s surface but still, in parts, open to the night air. Very odd, but of course very Deci.

Often unseen by visitors and mercenaries, many of the city’s people, outside of Cheapside, work industrially for poor wages, brutal masters and simple rewards. As many, if not more, are members of the city’s reputed Hundred Guilds and though the more powerful have been recognised by the city of late it is true to say that there are many such bodies that have not even been noticed by the city’s leaders. The gang culture lends itself very well indeed to Guilds.

Deci works different hours to other cities. It is a night-time settlement with hours of business and typical activity being almost exactly reversed, hour-to-hour, than elsewhere. There are both a lot of drow, orcs and citizens more comfortable about the shadows in Deci and this had led to the mannish folk being somewhat pallid, sickly looking wretches. The influx of fresh blood over the last century though means that if one accepts the underlying culture of criminality there is otherwise no real, stable civic character as such.

Naturally, colourful clothes are not common. Most being old, patched and handed down through many generations the majority are a sort of washed out brown or grey. Even the Nobles dress "down" in the sort of black favoured by they and adventurers. The Nobility of the city are again unlike those found elsewhere. Though of the Blood theirs is mingled with that of the cities ancient brigand leaders and the cities Houses are a markedly chillier bunch than those found elsewhere.

The city does have a solid trade foundation. There are an awful lot of traders in the Empire who come from Deci, the city producing ideal stock for the sort of tough, cunning men and women who range about the Empire. Most include the city on their regular route as firstly they know what to bring and what to take and secondly… well secondly they get to show off to the people they grew up with in the same manner as home-grown adventurers. The city does have resources of course, unlike the farms of the Heartlands Deci’s rural folk are often small time miners amd prospectors. The city itself might own a few mines but most of the cities material comes from independent gatherings who work their secretive holdings jealously. Likewise, with such raw metal about the city has long since been the home to a great many darkened sweat shops that turn out all manner of material goods from spades and hinges to nails and toe-caps. Just not food!

It is also a very, very crowded place. Even with the city doing its best to improve the housing for the citizens mostly still live in a variety of oddly shaped houses, lofts, garrets and jumbled tenements studded with dozens of lop-sided squares, bridges and crumbling alleyways. Deci people are not shy, not decent and live, eat and rut wherever it is possible to do so in what passes for privacy amongst the shared rooms or well-roamed rooftops.

Manners and modesty are for the Nobles and the dead.

Why Mercenaries Adventure in Deci
Because there is always someone hiring! The city is such a chaotic slum that events can be swallowed whole with hardly a whisper troubling those scant streets away. Whilst the Council is noticeably dedicated in some areas there has never been any real control exerted over those looking for a few able hands and indeed how could they? Traders and Guildsmen needing something sorted out quietly often come to Deci or spread the word to their peers that they are looking for a few a few willing swords. Of course it is also easy to dispose of any treasure acquired.

The city is also sat in the midst of a somewhat desolate, rocky series of hills and dead fields, dank streams and sickly winds, i.e. the North. Villages are scattered and though brigands find themselves dead inside three months from the city's dedicated hunters there is otherwise a lot of ground standing empty. The lack of people and brigands mean that trolls and other hearty mercenary fodder can be found in abundance and of course the Brekken Mountains, and thus the edge of Empire, can be seen smudging the far horizon on one of the city’s notoriously infrequent clear days. Deci doesn’t need the Mittlenacht to contain it’s lost villages and hidden valleys, it’s got all the room for them to be such under their own merit. Most of the rural gatherings mine the land of its resources and live in palisaded huddles or amongst the ruins of fallen and forgotten towers. A mercenary could probably find work just by taking a good stroll about the hills of Deci.

Probably the best reason though is that adventurers are something to which many people aspire in Deci. Whereas elsewhere mercenaries might be viewed as lax scum, murderous thugs or a necessary evil in Deci they are heroes to even the lowest grubrat! The people aren't interested in heroic tales or daring myths but they do want to be rich, feared and fat. And some of the most famous are very much all three.

Final Dawn IM 1006

The ancient tradition of The Dawn Blades are renewed as Jander forges the first of the new Dawn Blades, those weapons borne and wielded by the gods themselves. The first of his art is a Spear for Milora. The spear is given form and in so given this form is given a purpose, a single purpose, to slay Blauze.

The Governor, Troy Majius, is married in an unexpectedly public ceremony in the streets not far from the personal smithy of The Forge, despite the efforts of several forces to prevent the marriage, including the kidnap of his wife by Crime Lord Sammy Haymaker, subsequently rescued by Nichal Ogder. The celebrations are abruptly stopped by the appearance of The Murder, who belittles Troy and to the surprise of all present is in turn defied by Troy. A possibly suicidal act...

Mysterious, secretive and feared across the Empire the Silversmiths, the ritual masters who long haunted Deci and were relatively recently restored following Amora’s attempts to destroy their order, disappear without a trace. Rumours as to their where they have gone are rife, some say that they have gone where the Navigators went before them, Cragholme, some even say that they have refined their art and duplicated the feats of the Laiu, ascending beyond Primus. However the implications of their vanishing at this Final Dawn cannot bode well…

Major Events in Deci IM 1007

The madness of King Blackjack resulted in "Da Grate Fire of Blackjack" when he ordered the torching of Cheapside. When asked why he with a distinct lack of eloquence explained that he wanted to see what lay beneath. The horror visited on Deci however was not as great as it could have been. Such burns not being uncommon in the city in its history and that which could burn being relatively little, so whilst the council were horrified at a vast amount of their work being undone it was not as critical as it could have been and the city recovered remarkably well over the year. Scholars however will point out that Blackjack's reasoning was not without some merit. It is well known that Deci is built upon itself, successive generations building on top of it, what is much less well known is that Deci has no Mittlenacht shadow. It is also rumoured that to descend into the city beneath is to actually travel back in time where little has changed and the aforementioned facts may well be connected. It would seem possible that King Blackjack wished to see such for himself.

Long frustrated by the series of ritual strikes said to have originated from Deci against then and the lack of action to stop it or punish those perceived as responsible Eartholme, lead by Lady Alcaster, brought three tithes to the Convention of Nobilty.

The First: "That Deci be cast from the Empire. That it shall be punished thereafter as a foreign power waging ritual war upon the Empire – punished through means of arms and ritual."
The Second: "That the Governing of Deci is to be taken into the hands of the Covenant. Further, that it shall be made to pay a substantial punishment in both goods and to Eartholme. Further that reparations be made in addition that specifically cover damage to life and property."
The Third: "That Deci be made to pay reparations to Eartholme in consequence to loss of life and property."

Just scant hours before the Heralds announced the decision of the Lords The Chancellor personally declared that Troy Majius would be removed as Governor, in contravention of the eventual result of the tithe. Although entirely within his power and rights as Chancellor this single act was to set a chain of events in motion that would echo across the years.

With the Convention of Nobility rejecting the first two tithes and only accepting the third the Senate were placed in a no win situation, Eartholme had made it clear that they would not accept money for the lives of the slain and the only tithe the Nobles accepted was a payment for reparations by the city of Deci for the deaths caused by the ritual strikes. The unspoken implication from Eartholme’s stance was that if asked to accept a payment of money they would rouse the Earth Dragon and have it tear down Deci. A very real and feasible threat.

In an attempt to make a reasoned judgement of the nightmare weirgeld tithe that had been placed before them the Senate decreed that transfer of a certain parts of Deci territory to the control of Eartholme on a temporary basis and that a percentage of all produce within the Deci territories be sent to Eartholme.

The Finance Minister, Anath Halfblack, the man widely regarded as probably the only person able to enforce such a decree, warned the Senate that whilst initially this seemed an equitable solution in actuality the tithe was unenforceable. He then ignored their further requests to enact it, with the response he had more constructive things to do then rob Deci’s people of their chattels and if the Senate wanted the city’s goods then they would have to come and collect them themselves.

The short lived Governorship of Duke Ruatha Stoneheart, lasted little more than a month. Ill advised and pure bad luck had the new Governor turn up in Deci with 100 of the Senatorial Guard right in the middle of an attack on the city by a number of Tribals and Werewolves. In the assault five of the city’s Lords of Nobility were attacked. The assassins despite their were nature were utterly shredded by ghostly ritual defences that haunt the city although not before four Lords of House: Claugh, Gelmanslew, Hail and Rath were killed. It soon became obvious that the Tribes were guided by the wolves intimate knowledge of the city and that much was a diversion as an attempt to attack the Nobility.

In the morass of confusion the excitable Cheapsiders, on seeing Imperial colours raised in their city, made no discrimination between invading Tribals and a perceived Imperial invasion and attacked Duke Stoneheart's retinue. The Duke made it to the citadel with but only 20 men surviving. Just a few short months later the Duke left the city, having been barely seen for his tenure, in frustration at the city's attitude towards law and governance.

A few weeks later King Blackjack tore down the Citadel using its very ancient stone to forge his own little castle in Cheapside. Fortunately for the city the Citadel had been long abandoned by the council, each possessed of their own more secure seats of power scattered throughout the city.

Towards the end of the year Gabriel Drake, a Drave of the utmost integrity and fairness accepted the post of Governor of Deci, following discussion with the more obvious powers in the city, having very quickly realised that he could not govern the city without their direct support.

The Ex-Watch Captain of Thimon and Ex-Senator for Justice was one of the few outsiders prepared to try and help the city. Along with the new Governor arrived Dirk Draken, to act as Mennihaft. He had been invited to the post by Duke Stoneheart and welcomed to the Nobility by Lord Majius. Dirk very quickly blended in with the local Nobility, seeming to become as one of them with startling speed…

Final Dawn IM 1007

Forgetown seems to grow and gain a spark of life that bodes well for the upcoming year, with The Forge now having moved fully into the town, it is from here that he makes the second of his Dawn Blades, although slightly breaking with tradition, this year’s creation is not actually a blade but a shield, symbol of protection to give to Rand, who shields the people of the Baronies from depredation by the Blauze.

Several parts of the old city quite simply vanish, in something reminiscent of the disappearance of the Silversmiths at the last Dawn. The most notable disappearance so far being the entirety of The Poison Quarter.

Governor Drake is invited to visit with the ganglord Blackjack in his Fortress in Cheapside. Despite a great many warnings from various sources Drake agrees, somewhat predictably it was a trap. However Blackjack, failing to beat Drake by himself orders his men to beat the Governor, who, it has to be said, took quite a pounding yet was able to calmly walk out, despite numerous broken bones. Drake is later attributed to have said: “Everyone gets one chance… Blackjack blew his”

With this public beating of the Governor the people of Deci now appear to perceive Blackjack as their ruler. What Drake will do next is uncertain, what is known is that Drake left behind many friends in Thimon, many powerful friends, a cabal of dark ritualists and it is unlikely that such as they would brook this insult to Drake. Neither can the Empire sit back and let King Blackjack simply claim governance of the city of Deci. The empire has lost too many cities in recent years to let Deci slip from its grasp…

Events in Deci ~ Martius IM 1008

The city starts to draw up battle lines, becoming as physically a divided place as it had been in the minds of many for the last year. Primarily those who support King Blackjack against those who support Governor Drake and King Majius. It would appear that those more influential powers and factions in the city either actively oppose King Blackjack or at the very least have ignored his calls for alliance and remained somewhat neutral.

The entirety of the remaining Hundred’s guilds seem to move from their traditional birth place of Cheapside into the now booming Mercantile Quarter, which of late, at least amongst the Decites, seems to have acquired the unusual moniker of The Invisible Quarter. Business seems to be doing relatively well in the Mercantile Quarter despite the problems being suffered in other parts of the city and is now the most populous part of the city, some would say taking on the old mantle of the “city’s birth cradle” that had for centuries been the prerogative of Cheapside.

The Hundred who suffered at the hands of Blackjack’s attempts to exterminate them, they being the gangs of Cheapside, come up with a simple revenge and make good on the threat they issued at the Final Dawn: They refuse to step into Cheapside, refusing to construct anything for Blackjack and effectively allowing his edifices and buildings to collapse through lack of maintenance and upkeep. Although whether they would have been able to enter Cheapside or not is another matter, for Blackjack sealed the entire quarter, turning it into a single fortress, no way in and no way out, a virtual city within a city and not a place any would really wish to bring an army against.

Governor Drake stamps his authority on the remarkably receptive people of the Mercantile Quarter who acknowledge his Governorship of the city just as they acknowledge King Majius’ sovereignty. He publicly calls out and mocks Blackjack as a coward and dares him to turn up in the main drag of the somewhat neutral Forgetown for a one on one bout to decide their “differences”. It is widely expected, of course, that Blackjack will not answer such a call out. Whilst the people see no problem with the tactics that Blackjack used to beat Drake, them being “good honest Deci tactics”, they respect Governor Drake’s authority. It seems they have had good experiences with a Drave governor in the past and this has coloured their perception of Drake most favourably.

The city is visited by Earl Natal, accompanied by three of Primus’ most prolific Champions. It is known that they visited with Earl Duff but beyond that their business is secret, no doubt of concern for the very fabric of Primus or at the least matters of great import to the Empire.

The void left by the disappearance of the Poison Quarter beings to be felt in all manner of things. Although, with little surprise, at least the Merchant Halfblack manages to profit from the disappearance as those gamblers who would usually game in the Poison Quarter start to gather and gamble in the Cart and Hammer in Forgetown. Forgetown somewhat busy this month with a contingent of Keys Spears turning up to be fitted for and kitted out in the best armour that The Forge himself can produce in readiness for their upcoming battle with the Tribes of the Torn Isle.

The disappearance of the Mocker King seems to have left the Kallah at a loose end and possibly somewhat vulnerable, suffering from being hunted down by Blackjack, who seems to have decided they too, as servants of another King, should face extermination.

Events in Deci ~ Juon IM 1008

The Kingdom of Cheapside continues to draw malcontents, separatists and criminals from across the Empire to the standard of King Blackjack. A mightly host growing silently waiting to be raised as a force to take a stand against the Empire. Some of those forces left Fortress Cheapside to raid the rest of the city for supplies of food , weapons and armour and in their foray into The Slurries, where lie most of the city’s stores, they were unopposed. The guiding beacon that Cheapside has become to those who oppose the Empire seems to be shining across the entire realm.

The divisions within the city continue to grow between the supporters of the Two Kings with even the Kallah seeming to divide into two castes in the absence of the Mocker King. Two castes for two Kings, the Kallah of The Invisible and the Kallah of Cheapside, another sign that all out war within the city draws ever closer.

It would appear that Master Halfblack has dipped his fingers into one pie too many with an unexpected visit by the Countess Claugh. A personal visit from so busy and powerful a figure, widely believed to have been in Sellaville, would hardly seem to bode well for the Merchant who demonstrated an uncommon nervousness at her appearance in his chambers.

Recent newcomer to Deci, Moregil, found his attempts to carve out a little haven in the North Quarter contested somewhat by The Sleek Thugs. Having been appointed as Quarter Thug of the North Quarter by Governor Drake he very quickly discovered the reality of Deci’s hierarchy, with his small band of men and the Sleek Thugs coming close to trading blows. Perhaps somewhat naively he expected the Thugs to acknowledge his position without any real force to back up his assertion. It is rumoured that Baron Throttle, to whom the Sleek answer, took exception to an insult Moregil offered his brother the King, Earl Majius and that Moregil’s requests to Baron Throttle to order The Sleek Thugs to obey him will fall on deaf ears.

True to his Ivory Word from the previous month, Governor Drake waited in Forgetown for King Blackjack to turn up and settle their differences one-on-one. True to his nature King Blackjack failed to show, choosing to spend his days marking his territory, strolling the walls of Fortress Cheapside and deriding Governor Drake, King Majius and The Empress.

To add to the city’s problems an old Dragon by the name of Braugen, himself once a King of Deci, returned to the city. Having been supernaturally empowered by the obeisance of North Warden Kintarma, who bowed down before him, he came seeking vengeance on King Majius, who along with other mercenaries had robbed from his hoard. The Dragon had recently woken from a sleep of some centuries following some imprisonment or defeat by one of Deci’s Princes.

Events in Deci ~ Jurrle IM 1008

With Midsunner past the city of Deci appeared to be enjoying a veritable rejuvenation. News of the Senate’s intention to rescind the punishment levied against the city had reached its denizens. Those miners that had never accepted the Senate’s decision but had been effectively barred from trade with the city started to return. With the return of the miners those that had fled it for other reasons, over the also years started to return. And of course with the miners came their precious produce, the ore, which once more flowed onto the city’s markets and poured into the Slurries, flowing into the city’s foundries and heavy industries that lay in that city quarter.

And with fortune, shining on the city it also enjoyed further good news with the seemingly limitless stream of charcoal now arriving from the King’s Heap, thus solving the problem of the city’s need for fuel and freeing it from the reliance on wood imported from as far a field as the Baronies for its energy. With the Ore and charcoal, veritable victuals and wine of the city, now in abundance the industry roared once more as the hum of the foundries became a cacophony of hammer and smelter.

All witnessed by the city’s Finance Minister who for so long had watched it slumber. The Forge was away from the city, as was Earl Majius, for both Jander and the Earl had business elsewhere but the Finance Minister expected their soon return and knew that the news would please them, it certainly pleased him as he worked.

True not all was perfect, those territories ceded to Eartholme had decided, at least for the time being, that they were of Eartholme but that was a minor concern for the Lords of Deci would no doubt re-establish their dominion over these places. But this was just a small problem in the greater picture.

Moregil, in the Northern Quarter, continued his work to help the people there and instill in them a sense of Imperial Law and mocked by the Sleek Thugs who once more he sought to command as if they were his own. Still seemingly oblivious to the fact that in Deci power is taken and earnt, never given. He was warned however by one of the more civic of the Kallah schisms, the Kallah of the Invisible, that his little haven was perhaps now in danger should Blackjack turn his attentions northwards in the city.

However, as ever in Deci, peace and order was never to last and before the month was out news of war within the city was heard. King Blackjack of Cheapside had attacked the Slurries, the southern quarter of the city, the quarter which had just been restored to life with the arrival of ore and charcoal.

Sire Berry having made it clear that he would brook no violence in Stab Street had set his Stepsons and gangs to patrol his little turf and it remained inviolate, with not even King Blackjack bold enough to seek to corner the Goblins and Rats in their own territory on the edge of Cheapside.

Blackjack’s men, not having met with resistance the previous month, were obviously emboldened and flooded into the streets of the Slurries, no longer held back by the malice of the Poison Quarter they swept in. Little stopping them until they ran into those who stood guard at the Foundries and Smelters: Jander’s Blades, lead by Bull, and the golem Khopesh who wandered the streets dispensing law.

Jander’s Blades fought to defend their people, homes, workplaces and lives but in the end, despite their stand they were overwhelmed by the numbers, and the fought till all that was left was Bull, a mighty smith and loyal reeve of The Forge. Who’s strength and toughness was so great that in the end he had to be roped down from afar.

The golem Khopesh fought with the stoicism that can only come from being a Golem, untiring, unstopping and uncaring of his own state. Herding off the attackers, and giving those who wished to escape the massacre a chance to flee.

Still, the once King of Deci, Braugen, a Dragon, woken from a sleep of centuries was to find his pleasure at returning to the city and his intent reclaiming his position as one of the city’s Kings cut short at the wrong end of a Lance of The Black Knight. In true Deci style the slaying resembled something not unlike an assassination as the Dragon was occupied with what it perceived to be an insignificant creature in the form of the Golem, Khopesh, who’s bravery acted as such a distraction that the Dragon did not even notice the Knight’s charge from behind…

As the month ended the city was left divided, now with two of its five quarters in the hands of King Blackjack. The ire of King Majius at the slaughter of his subjects had to be tempered by his Vizier, and for once even the serpent tongued Vizier seemed to decide that silence was, for the greater part, wise. Although his unusual quietness on the matter has left many in Deci wondering what exactly the duplicitous Vizier thinks of the attack.

Governor Drake, who was visiting the rural lands of Deci for the first time, with his usual calm made it clear that Blackjack’s time was now at an end.

On hearing the news The Forge entered a great rage, swearing that the Orc would feel the kiss of the Final Act of Kindness, the mighty blade he wields, in response to the deaths of his men and followers. Blackjack has added to the list of his enemies an old mercenary, a Legend, a past ruler of the city and a man with a great many favours to call in from far and wide and in doing so angered a god. Few fires burn hotter than The Forge and the anger of a Primal Deity in their own bailiwick is not to be taken lightly.

In the Court of King Majius all but one voice has cried out up in anger at this new outrage and it seems that the alliances forged by Majius, Drake and Sunstar over the years are about to be called upon and such forces are not to be underestimated. It would seem that war has come to Deci and the rule of King Blackjack of Cheapside is about to be disputed, violently…

Events in Deci ~ Octuar IM 1008

And it came to pass that war came to Deci for the fury of the Sunstar had forged a mighty alliance that he might hammer King Blackjack.

Of course many in The Grand Hundred and the shadowed places of power in Deci and the Halls of Halgar said that the forces had not merely formed at the calling of the Forge but that the Bastion were taking the opportunity to bring the city under heel and remind it of its place in the Empire.

Whatever view was believed the fact was Heroes and Helds gather to make war on a single Orc and his self proclaimed Kingdom.

The Forge tasted bitterness as he had been forced to turn the first of his great Warmachines against his own home city, a place he had lived in for decades, even been Governor of at one time and now he was forced to attack it.

The ritualists of Thimon brought various gifts for Blackjack, the most fearsome was a curse unleashed by the Diomedes Stadtus of Thimon.

Whilst the battle roared on in Cheapside, or Old Deci, the guilds turned their backs on the madness and, lead by the Vizier, conducted their yearly celebration in the Mercantile Quarter, despite the storms.

Sire Berry and his kin stayed holed up in Stab Street, which was able to maintain its neutrality and desire not to be involved in any conflict in Cheapside with remarkable adeptness. The Warlord had a few choice words for the shrewd Sire regarding his refusal to fight despite being technically paid by the Bastion. The Sire having reminded the Warlord that his original contract with the Bastion specified that they would never fight Blackjack’ smen.

Very quickly it became obvious that Castle Cheapsdie was no mere light affectation. King Blackjack had turned Cheapside into a complex maze, the only thing likely as complicated in Deci being the Viziers tallies and accounts…

The battle raged on for a day and a night. The strength of the Forge’s Host being broken and all but utterly destroyed saved only by the Warden of Air’s fearsome battlefield rites. Something that would cause no end of problems for the city in the future given the Forge’s Host was drawn from the city’s guildsmen…

In the end though the “Grate Black Orc” could not stand against the might of so many gathered with so single minded a purpose but even then, even in defeat, it was not a blade of man that struck him down but a strike of entropic drawn lightning that felled King Blackjack, the terror of Old Deci town…

NOTE: This is a really (badly) précised rendition of the battle turn that became known as Black Orc Down. Its full text can be found in The Companion, Issue Ten Volume Six, 31st December 2008, which is well worth a read if only for a proper roll call of who turned up to stop a single orc!

Events in Deci ~ Noveas IM 1008

This month seemed to be one where the city turned its attentions to the rural lands of its territories.

Those lands, once Deci’s, then tithed to Eartholme and once more returned to Deci were visited by King Majius kin. The Lord Sleek, Baron Throttle, in his inimitable style reminded the inhabitants of the currently less than loyal village of Fryer’s Held, who their masters were and the city was once more returned to the Deci fold. The somewhat lethal demonstration of his psychic powers enough to silence any Malcontent.

Count Majius, the Baron of Scathe, had been sent by the King to speak with Farmer Coley and with his usual diplomacy and honeyed words persuaded the farmer to once more align with the city and send it its due tribute along with get his people to reassert their loyalty to Deci.

In Forgetown The Local Preacher, Master Tirack of Shaehan, was to perform the wedding ceremony for Mayor Gideon Borealis, a ceremony that seemed to have drawn a great many couples from across the territories on hearing the news of one willing to perform such. The Market Town was swamped, something like 2,000 couples came seeking to be wed for various reasons and in the end Tirack had to perform a mass ceremony for the gathered couples. Master Halfblack’s plans to provide a certain amount of dowry for the couples resulted in some hasty recalculations as he realised quite how many couples there were.

Those with business in Forgetown were seen to have done a roaring trade this month. The market town was busier than it has ever been before, busier than even Merchant Halfblack had expected, leaving at one point the strange sight of him weeping at having brought 10 bundles for sale when they were fetching prices triple that he had bought buy them at, weeping for his lost opportunity for profit and the grulls that he had failed to catch…

In The Slurries attempts by The Forge to retrieve his dead were met with great hostility. The people seeing only a man who had turned against their King and brought Imperial troops into the city, unwilling to see the need they simply saw betrayal and wisely Jander decided not to test their anger and left empty handed.

In Cheapside Governor Drake, guided by Sire ‘Berry of Stabstreet and accompanied by King Majius, The Princess Flay and Moregil, toured the old city, the vast majority of which now lay under flood waters that had nowhere to recede. It was a less than pleasant experience with bloated water logged bodies everywhere and seeing the rapidly decaying nature of Blackjack’s once Kingdom. A Kingdom that had been held together by personality and fear now divided and falling without that personality and without that fear to unite it.

The city was, visited by one not seen for some time, Master Berek, and with him he brought two visitors, Charmin’ Billy and another ancient King of the city, said to be one of Billy’s Ancestors, one of the first Kings of Deci. A visit said to have angered King Majius, who still held a price on Billy’s head for the deaths of four Lords of Deci Nobility. It was also noted, if only privately amongst some, that the Earl was not happy with yet another King of Deci in his city.

On a somewhat lighter matter the city was visited by The Fool in Yellow, Harley of Scarlene who entertained the masses.

Final Dawn IM 1008

Much as with the previous month the rulers of Deci were involved in stamping their authority, in its various forms on the city and the people before the turning of the Dawn that Primus might view the city under heel. The last of those towns and villages in the Deci territories that had taken advantage of the tithes to pay tribute to neither Deci nor Eartholme were brought under heel and returned to Deci

The town of Rockmud played host to Governor Drake who made it clear that they were to acknowledge the city as to its masters. His forthright nature and a promise that there would be no blowing up of heads, coupled with his affirmation that it was the will of The Forge that they return saw this a somewhat simple task.

In the trading village of Fother the less-than-happy-to-be-out-in-the-cold-wilds Vizier, Master Halfblack, was likewise able to persuade the locals that it was Deci to which the belonged and Deci to whom they should tie.

The last of the places of note, the great Silver Mine of Geld’s Claim was visited by The Forge himself, a visit that proved more disruptive than he intended as the miners gazed upon their Walking-God, or, more accurately, prostrated themselves at his feet. He was amazed at the huge stockpiles of metal ores that formed great fortification like walls around the area. Over a year’s unsold produce, unable to send to Deci but unwilling to send to Eartholme. News of which Jander quite happily took back to the Vizier to arrange for its collection.

As with the previous Final Dawn, Forgetown found itself being expanded upon once more, through the skills of the Drewin Art, on loan to Master Halfblack by the Baron of Drewin’s Vale.

Earl Majius concerned himself with visiting vengeance on Charmin’ Billy, the werewolf held responsible for the deaths of four of the Lords of Deci in recent years. Billy, being a survivor, and much to the annoyance of the Earl, survived by dint of evading all attempts to find him and resisting all attempts of the city to curse him. The Ancient Were-King though was not quite so lucky and met with death at the hands of Baron Throttle and thus removing any pretender to the Earl’s throne, although not before biting the Earl's face clean off...

On discovering the death of the Were-King the normally laid back and generally placid Master Berek flew into a fearsome rage the likes of which had never been seen by those who had known him for decades and the wise stayed well clear of the Master Archer as he mourned the death of the Were-King.

Somewhat hurriedly and almost incidentally Jander reclaimed his position as Sire of the Warsmith’s guild without challenge and ended the year working on his third Dawn Blade, forged for the Warden of Air as payment and thanks for his pivotal role in the Battle of Cheapside.

It was later discovered that the end of the year had not entirely gone without incident as Lord Hail, the head of the powerful House Hail “was lost to the city”, euphemism for most likely assassinated, or worse, given the time of year, sacrificed. What King Majius thought of this was never said but those close to him gauged a certain degree of anger at the death of another of the Lords of Deci and another of his powerful allies.

Events in Deci ~ Martius IM 1009

This month the city was met with a strangely productive and calm. The events of the last year seemingly distant memories. The people free of the madness of King Blackjack and the fear of The Murder found themselves, for the first time, in a long time, able to just get on with their lives and this they did.

Following last years floods Cheapside still remained under water but the adaptive people of Cheapside simply took to living a storey higher in the buildings and using the terraces as make shift roads.

This, being the first month of the thaw after the deathly would see the start of the Plague season and the bodies of those who died during the Battle of Cheapside were once more exposed to the elements. In order to avert a pestilential disaster the people came together under the leadership of Governor Drake to clear the bodies from the city. This they did without comment, without anger or a belief that it was bneath them. The hard working Wastrel of the city just got on with it and Governor Drake mucked in, quite literally, alongside of them. By the end of the month the dead had been cleared and great piles of them lay outside the gate of the Northern Quarter.

The Sleek, answered the Governor’s challenge to bring law to the city and he did such in the only way that the wilful denizens of the city seem to understand, brutally. He made the punishments fit the crime with terrible irony, so extreme were his acts that he wiped out an entire guild, The Tarboilers, leaving the Guild Sires of the city to take Master Halfblack aside and ask if perhaps The Sleek could not be tempered somewhat and if the destruction of an entire guild might not be considered a little extreme, even for Deci.

The city was once more visited by Berek Fletcher, who burning with vengeance sought to stir up the people against its leaders for the death of the Were-King. He railed against The Sleek, Baron Throttle, The Beaters and the Deci Hunt but lacking the sly tongue of the practiced Orator or Preacher few listened and even fewer were swayed by his words. The people had had enough of rebellion and war, they just wanted to get on with their lives and so what if one King had killed another, that’s what Kings did. They simply got on with the tasks of moving bodies out the city, those reminders of who really paid the price when their leaders went to war.

It was said that this month the Kallah had met in secret counsel, and not wishing the interference of the ever meddlesome Vizier able to interfere, they declined to admit him to their gathering. Since the end of Blackjack the Kallah that had previously been split between the Two Kings of Deci had now fragmented into five. Deci had become a city with five Kallah Lords, one for each of the quarters of the city, quarters that have become almost distinct cities in themselves due to the diversification of their local cultures.

The Vizier spent most of the month attending to a great many tasks, busy as ever, his fingers reaching across the inner workings of the city he most keenly involved himself in arranging for the collection of some of the mounds of silver ore that Jander had discovered at Geld’s Claim the previous month, ore that the city’s industry much needed.

In the North of the city Master Moregil continued to stamp his mark, this month his attentions turned to the issue of Smuggling and with some success he was able to make headway into ensuring that city produce, at least in the northern quarter, was beginning to once more start making its way to the official city markets.

Events in Deci ~ Maii IM 1009

And so it began, the Second War of the Wolf. Dirk Drakken, Mennihaft of Deci, rode across the city with purpose, accompanied by his finely liveried men, all Deci Killers true, although such was lost on the Noble Knight who’s blinkered vision saw them as fine serfs and peons... He worked across the city killing the Wolves in vengeance for their attack against the Nobility, that had seen the Heads of four Nobles Houses slain in the assault on Deci during the short tenure of Governor Stoneheart. This had been the reason Dirk had come to Deci, to ensure the safety of the Nobles and the punishment of the scallywags who had thought to attack their betters, admittedly this perhaps had not been quite what those who had sent him to Deci had expected but such is the way of The Drakken.

Across the city the wolves hid or fled but barely fought, simply hunted down as beasts, caught and killed, even their peaceful wise elders who had wanted nothing of the war and had helped broker the weregild that had ended the First War of the Wolf. No distinction was made between those who had lived peacefully in the city and those who had raised their claw against its rulers. In fact, something that had not occurred t any of those that ruled was that the blood of wolves wasn’t pure. The lineage of wolf and human had mixed for centuries in the melting pot of Deci as families intermarried and intermingled. Trueblood wolves and trueblood humans, even amongst the Nobility, was rare, and a good proportion, perhaps one in ten, of the city could easily count the blood of lycanthropes in their veins…

It was said that Master Halfblack was furious, even daring to raise his voice to the King whom he blamed for this folly of renewed war just as the city had settled itself. Just after he had spent months getting the city back on its feet. And this month had seen him be extraordinarily busy. Getting ever closer to his aims for the city and seeing the light at the end of the tunnel suddenly blocked off with the prospect of war, the primal anathema to trade. And he did not wish to know what the Mocker King would think of the mockery of the peace that had been wrought in his name. He all too well remembered Tamary’s words when Argoth had sought to end the First War of the Wolf and remembered how Argoth had brushed aside the advice of the City Spirit.

Just outside the city’s northern gate Governor Drake dirtied his hands with the worst of jobs. He helped to build the cremation pyres to finally remove the bodies that. Following certain enquiries from Bildteve as to what would be done with the rather large number of bodies the Vizier’s requested that, Master Moregil had sent his men to watch over he pyres and ensure no one interfered with the deceased. Even The Vizier has his limits and balked at the idea selling the dead as so much commodity, that sounded suspiciously like something the fiends of the Sunless might engage in with their flesh pits, the Liches of Felldrakken Isle or even the Necromancers of Thimon. Such violation of the city’s own dead was distasteful to him.

The Preacher of Forgetown made his way to Deci this month, to see to the Cheapside monument to the fall of King Blackjack and to say words of prayer for the souls of those to be burnt in the great pyres. The cold chill of Deci though brought home starkly to he and his followers the difference between Deci and their home of Forgetown.

The Vizier was busy this month, with scheme after scheme after scheme, all disparate, all different but each a piece of a puzzle that would fit together only at the end, a single destination travelled by many paths. Few knew what it was he sought and even fewer understood how his manipulations would allow him to reach his aim. He handed out tasks to each and every man of note in the city, whether ruler, Guild Sire, Guild Master, Trader or Gatherer and without question they simply performed as requested, as each player in an orchestra would follow the music given to complete the piece that Master Halfblack had scribed. The end of the month saw the completion of a great market that sprawled across the entirety of The Invisible Quarter but even then it did not seem that the Vizier was quite complete in his work or plans, whatever they might be.

At the end of the month Earl Majius took on the mantle of King of Deci. For some time it had been inevitable that such would happen, and for sometime he had borne the title of “king” but had never formally accepted it. For years now the signs and portents throughout the city had made it clear that such was needed. There was something about the primal nature of Deci that both desired and required a King and despite both Troy and Anath’s wariness at such and the Vizier’s caution against assumption of such it seemed the path no longer lead elsewhere and even the Vizier had to admit that the city would be better off with a proper King to rule it.

It was during the King’s formal assumption of the title that he chose to present his progeny, twins, his son Ulis Majius and his daughter, Terabella Vantenya Arastel Dathdenaragel Anathella Of The Third Broken Promise Darkness Pool About Me Majius. He had named his son whilst his wife had named their daughter. With the pomp and circumstance so beloved by the common folk of Deci he named his courtiers, granting those councillors who served him titles in accordance with the old ways of the city. Somewhat unwisely though he seemed to have forgotten to include the city’s nobility in his court but never the less the people cheered and the ill feeling that had been building in the city due to the deaths caused by the hunting of the wolves was banished by the people’s delight at once more having a proper King to lead them.

Events in Deci ~ Juon IM 1009

With Earl Majius and Governor Drake away in Halgar, along Baron Throttle and Dirk, on matters of politics the city was depleted of its leadership and somewhat quieter than usual, especially given that it was the Hundred’s Festival.

The Deci Dead Lands
For some time the issue of losing production from the city's mines had troubled the Vizier and, in a moment of inspiration, duplicated by Governor Drake, a solution had been proposed, planned and implemented. The Forge travelled the territories of Deci, marking those mines that were worked by the city and forging trails between them and the city, trails which became known as the Deci Tin Roads. Cuts were made in hills, old markers were unearthed, woods hacked through and marshland drained. Dust was packed down and fords raised. Markers constructed and great metal poles with an arrow pointing to the city marking out the way from mine to market to ensure undisturbed delivery.

The Invisible Quarter
The lack of civic leadership beyond The Vizier and The Forge meant that the celebration was somewhat lower key than normal but the guilds attended to their business of yearly deliberation in The Halls of the Grand Hundred within the Invisible Quarter and as ever many deals were struck, bargains made and alliances forged within the multitude of guilds whose love of intrigue and internal politics at times rivals that of the Nobility, even those ensconced in Halgar. As Head of the Warsmiths a certain amount of such might have been expected of Jander but with his nature not given to such the Warsmiths, though influential.

Much to the delight of the Vizier, who had worked somewhat tirelessly for months with a cunning beyond even his usual repertoire, he had managed to persuade the Traders of the King’s Bazaar to relocate within the Invisible Quarter given their ousting from the city of Alguz. A city who’s greatly reduced simplicity, a result of rejecting the rites of the Imperial Foundation Guilds, meant it could not contain the complexity of the Bazaar.

Cheapside
Power seems to rarely remain in a vacuum and across the quarter in less than a year since the downfall of King Blackjack the Black Hat, mark of the esteemed Sire ‘Berry seems to be appearing across the quarter and gangs start to fall under dominion of Stab Street as this month the Scribblers met a swift end at the forces of Sire ‘Berry.

And, as if by some shadow of a memory of the passing of the King it rained in across Cheapside, across Cheapside and nowhere else within the city. Perhaps mere coincidence, or perhaps a scar on the nature of Primus left by the powerful rites that helped to cast down the King. A warning maybe to those who might seek to use ritual to solve their problems that such powerful rites are not with problems of their own. A lesson seemingly fading from the minds of rulers, a forgetfulness of the devastation wrought by the historically cyclic ritual wars, the most recent being the Choas War.

The North Quarter
Was quiet, even by the standards set by Master Moregil, who was nowhere to be seen in the city, rumour said that he had travelled southwards to join those forces that fought in the Sunless. Something that was, quite frankly, not the done thing in Deci. Signing up for either a fair fight and certain doom. Still, Master Moregil never was quite of the Deci mindset.

And so the city, was quiet, a quiet that none knew would last, the city seemed to lack the capacity to just get on with it. All knew it would be just a matter of time before those wolfkin who’s weregild with the Nobility had been betrayed would return to remind the rulers of the city that its people can only be pushed so far…

Events in Deci ~ Septus IM 1009

In response to the growing myronese threat the Vizier ordered the ancient Walls of Deci were finally repaired somewhat, , although the work was in severe danger of being hindered due to the constant attempts of thievery of the materials put aside to build the walls. Fortunately the Black Kngiht stood watch over the work chasing off those who would steal from the city. Until, something akin to a very strange pantomime the Black Knight was challenged to a somewhat improbably duel by a somewhat improbable Dirk…

Hightown
In Hightown, deep in the Spire the King Troy The Faceless had summoned all the Nobility of Deci to him, formally holding Court. What happened within the Spire is unknown and it would be only a fool who would try and pry into the affairs of Earl Majius within his own city.

Forgetown
The busiest time of the year in Forgetown, the Joining Ceremony. Master Halfblack held a court of his own in The Cart and Hammer with a number of the Heads of the Hundreds Guilds, proving himself an adept gambler, which given the involvement of money was perhaps no real surprise.

Unlike last’s year’s relatively high profile marriage of local Alchemist, Mayor Gideon Borealis, was no high profile marriage but another mass ceremony that ended with many of the luminaries of Forgetown engaging in a slightly tuneless musical celebration. Still, despite the huge amounts of money sunk into the celebration, it’s rumoured that Master Halfblack still managed to profit from the yearly event, especially after the run no sales of shovels...

The Rural Lands
There was rumour that Governor Drake was to finally retire and had informally stepped down from office but his last act before doing so was to seek out Charmin’ Billy and see if he could not arrange some sort of peace between he and the city. Drake’s reputation for fairness and justice served him well as he was able to speak with Billy but the news was not good. The Wolves would neither forgive nor forget what the Nobles had done to them and even now as the King held court in Deci they were sacking the Majius Lands… The old feud had erupted with new venom and fervour, the Lords of the city were once more at war with the Wolves and it was in danger of breaking up into factions.

Events in Deci ~ Noveas IM 1009

Despite warnings from Earl Majius and Master Halfblack against such Mayor Borealis, long determined to enter the infamous Cheapside Shop of the City Spirit, Ulis Tamary, the foremost Alchemist in the Empire, to find out his secrets, was finally able to secure the method to enter, by having Sire ‘Berry requisition the Key from the Kallah Lord of Cheapside.

Master Tirack, took a trip to the town of “Don’t Go There”, aptly named as a place full of the unclean. They had once been dwellers in the city until some time ago the city, suffering from a terrible pestilence, had such focussed on them and they were banished from the city, taking the plague with them and saving the city from worse but afflicted as they were they, or maybe even their descendants, still suffer from this terrible plague and they are out casts, something that obviously played on the Shaehan Priest’s mind as he began to consider the means to relieve them of their ills.

With the biggest Society event of the year taking place in Thimon, the wedding of Countess Claugh, formally of Deci and now of Sellaville and the Duke Bartholomaw along with the formal creation of the new House Claugh-Bartholomaw, approved by the Convention of Nobility in the previous month’s tithe, the city was devoid of its leading Nobility with both the King and the city’s Mennihaft, Dirk, in Thimon.

Jander was ensconced deep in his mine, the First Mine, said to be the first place that Primus yielded metal from the ground to the tribes after they had stolen knowledge of metal working from the Gathen. Tale, truth, history or legend it matters not, the fact remains that this mine has unusual properties and Jander was busy investigating its mysteries and restoring it to its former glory, leaving him far away from the city.

The Stadtus, the Pariah Twirl, for his own reasons, broke into the old Amoran mansion that had long been sealed up. The city guilds had been instructed a long time ago to seal the place up and have it forgotten, which it had been until Twirl put the fear of Dark Twilight into the Guilds, who’s leaders were strangely absent, into re-opening the old mansion allowing him to delve into its secrets.

The Sleek was out of the city, having to, as ever, do his brother’s dirty work, visiting the family lands to see what damage had been wrought by the previous month’s attack by the wolves and to see how the land could be retaken.

Moregil’s absence from the North Quarter and Star Set Square continued, no doubt resultant of his campaign in the Sunless.

Even Sire Berry was not just out of Cheapside but out of Deci itself, having travelled to Forgetown to ensure the Crossbow Wedding of his (Step)Daughter to local loveable Rogue Rex.

This left the only council member, or person of note, in the city Master Halfblack, a fact that was to later prove somewhat, unfortunate given the attack that month by the the wolves on the city. Charmin’ Billy and the Wolves however were somewhat put out by the absence of anyone of note from the city and, failing to locate Master Halfblack, who seemed always one step ahead of them, evading them or melding into the ever morphing and ever changing invisible Quarter, had to settle with this month rounding up the Heads of The Hundred’s Guilds and having them dance the hangman’s jig.

True to his cowardly Mercantile nature Master Halfblack continued to decline to get involved in this new war that had descended against Deci, all against his advice, and thus continued with his daily work, having ascertained that he would return from the Gressenfest far too late to be able to intervene…

Final Dawn IM 1009

The Final Dawn passed with no great incident in Deci, the most interesting event being the appointment of Selgard, The Baron of Drewin’s Vale, as the new Imperial Governor. The more suspicious of affairs in Deci might have wondered if the ever manipulative Vizier had somehow managed to influence matters to his own choice for the new Governor but he could hardly influence the Senate in their choice of such, could he?

Selgard, most wisely, took time to wander around the city and familiarise himself with its hierarchy of power. It became obvious very quickly that the ruler of the city, if not in name but in actuality, was none other than its King, Earl Majius. The new Governor observed that oddly however, the sovereignty of the King makes the city far more stable with the ever rebellious populace firmly of the belief that they are free of the yoke of the Empire and that being the case that they have rebelled there is no need for further rebellion…

It was also obvious that the day to day running performed by its cunning Vizier from his ever elusive halls of power that make up the ever changing and never constant Invisible Quarter. Still, Selgard was no fool and having grown up and lived in Deci long enough had expected little else than he had found. To be fair, his tenure was already going far, far better than that of his predecessor’s predecessor, despite the lack of anything resembling actual power, influence, bureaucracy or even an office. The lack of an office being mainly resultant of a lack of a Citadel…

Of the Citadel Selgard found little trace, it having been torn down brick by brick by Blackjack during the short tenure of a previous Governor, leaving only a strange castle like folly, home to the city’s Mennihaft, Dirk Drakken. Similarly he had found no trace of Imperial Scribe, they too having been long ago extinguished in the city, like the absent watch, unable to function.

Strangely, whenever his thread’s of investigation into the city showed promise they seemed to end up with a somewhat busy Master Halfblack at the end.

Of King Troy The Faceless and his Kin Baron Throttle The Lord Sleek, no word was to be had, though no doubt they had quiet business in the Spire of Nobility or on the Majius estates at the ever auspicious time of year.

The Forge, as is his custom, spent the Dawn forging a dawn blade, rumoured to be a pair of Knives for Death, tending to his mine, The First Mine and, of course, claiming the role of Guildsire of the Warsmiths for a second year running.

The Black Knight was seen for but a short time in the city, the Spire Guard, or as some referred to them, Black Guard, due to their black enamelled armour, had reformed and now served the Black Knight in defence of the city, or at least its Nobles and rumour was that over the Final Dawn the Black Guard had Primus bear witness to their oaths.

One of the more intriguing events was the replacement of the Sires and Masters of the Hundred’s Guilds. The recent slaughter of the previous Guild Sires and Masters by the Werewolves had resulted in a less than smooth transition to new master at the end of the year and that Jander managed to retain his position as head of the Warsmiths for another year, in a role that, in his hands, is becoming seemingly more ceremonial than practical, will no doubt lend to great stability in the Warsires. Still the unusual lack of politics and careful handover from outgoing guild Sire to incoming will no doubt have reverberations for Deci society for the year and perhaps beyond as the new lack the guiding, some might say constraining, hand of their predecessors.

The ever busy Vizier, having seen to paperwork relating to the city’s markets took time to ensure that those who had worked hard for him personally over the past year were well rewarded for their efforts and afforded the opportunity to celebrate the year’s end at his largesse.

Cheapside, ever insular to the rest of the city found itself entertaining the ambitions of Sire ‘Berry, who over the year had spread the mark of the Black Hat across sizeable parts of the quarter extending from Stab Street. Now, undoubtedly, the biggest gang in Deci, the rest waited to see what his next move would be, would he, could he, emulate the Grate Black Orc and seize the quarter?

In the depths of the Deathly season life in Forgetown went on as it does, although the absence of Mayor and local Alchemist Gideon was marked. The Preacher Man, Master Tirack, took it upon himself to visit the pariah town of “Don’t Go There”, its name and reputation in conjunction with the harshness of the season however meant that those supplies Tirack had wished sent to help the unfortunates of that town that had been organised by Master Halfblack never got further than the relative comfort of Forgetown and the Cart and Hammer.

Rumour went round about the enlarging of the First Mine and the founding of a surrounding Hamlet by the imaginative name of Forge Holm by Jander.

All in all a somewhat quiet Final Dawn for the usually chaotic Deci.

Events in Deci ~ Maii IM 1010

Deci and Forgetown found themselves rather devoid of its great lords this month with Jander deep in The First Mine, Master Halfblack away in Scarlene, The Lord Sleek unseen, Mayor Borealis in Alguz, even Master Tirack seemingly absent from the territories. With the absence of any other luminary, Forgetown seemed to be in the hands of Master Rex, who provided a little entertainment in the form of some rather brutal prize fighting.

Baron Selgard continued with his new Governorship by beginning his tour of the Deci rural lands, starting at the old village of Fryer’s Held, looking to speak with the people and learn more of them, their needs and how they could best be helped by the city. They were, unsurprisingly, somewhat reluctant to show their faces at first but a little patient on the part of Selgard and restraint from causing their heads to explode eventually saw them laughing at his assertion that the city was here to help them but at least through such laughter they relaxed and were emboldened enough to come out and speak with him. His case was, somewhat paradoxically, further helped by the arrival of The Black Knight who’s presence only added to Selgard’s assertion that he was “different” from the other Lords of Deci.

Earl Majius enjoyed a busy month, having been left a substantial list of things to do by Master Halfblack in his absence but the King still had time to visit the King’s Bazaar for a little shopping, where he bumped into the Mennihaft of Halgar, who, somewhat coincidentally, was in the King’s Bazaar with his own entourage for a spot of shopping. Somewhat fortunately for Count Synovius, The House Natal bodyguard whom he had brought along was far more understanding of local customs and mores than the Count and prevented him from saying anything to Earl Majius that the King’s subjects would have taken as an assault and might lead to an untimely death…

Having ascertained that the Count had no scroll that he would consider his own the King returned to the Spire where upon he tried out the Gressen Curio that the Vizier had purchased from Sire Haruld, which for some reason after he had assembled it had left him with three pieces that he could not quite work out where they needed to be go...

Once started the unusual contraption aerosolised some potion that had an immediately uplifting mood on the King and his loyal subjects. Having also ensured that the pestilence of the season would not affect the city overly badly Earl Majius retired to the Spire to examine the Scriven Scrolls that he had purchased and to speak with a Priestess of the Deci Hag on some matter, no doubt pertaining to midwifery.

Cheapside was, however, on the boil. Sire ‘Berry, having taken umbrage at what he perceived as a certain lack of respect for him and his by “having a word” with one of the gangs. The fragile balance of peace that had been achieved in Cheapside at the Final Dawn between the gangs of Cheapside was shattering and it was said that the Earl had been more than a little displeased at another gang war breaking out in his city, memory of the troubles of King Blackjack foremost in his mind. Many in The Invisible Quarter wondered how Master Halfblack would react on hearing of such trouble rearing its head once more within the city walls.

I've recently updated the Deci Boards to be a more expansive source of info, in particular I've updated the section that might be of ost use to LRP for players and refs looking for source material. If anyone has any ideas for additional useful stuff that could be included there please drop me an email.

The most relevant LRP bits are in the Deci Landmarks section:
