Firstly I’d like to wish everyone a belated happy new year, and hope 2019 is a good one for you. The turning of the year, always finds me reflecting on previous years, what went well, what could have been better. I won’t bore everyone with my thought processes but a few changes in the way things are happening at the caves for 2019. These will all be effective as of 26th January 2019.

We have run the annual monster incentive for a number of years, and whilst we believe it has worked to increase numbers, last year saw a drop off in its effectiveness. It has been debated a few times over the past couple of months, we have also taken some recent forum posts under advisement, and to that end, there will not be an annual monster incentive this year. Moving forward we are going to try a crew loyalty scheme. To that end each time you crew a full day at the caves (or overland) (Tuesdays, and extended lengths will have separate reward structures), you will receive a “loyalty point” each time a club member has earned 12 “loyalty points” they will be rewarded with either 600 character points, or 1000 monster points and a +21/7 life item. The observant will notice that this is a similar reward structure to previous annual rewards, but takes into account people possibly not wanting to commit for a year, or certain months. The “Loyalty points” will be recorded from de-brief sheets so it is important that monster names are filled in on the de-brief sheets.

That leads me on nicely to my next point. There are now new de-brief sheets available. These bring with them a number of changes, they are as follows.
Monster points are no longer signed on by the desk. Instead they will be signed on by the referee of your dungeon and recorded on the de-brief sheet. For ease I would suggest these are signed at the end of the day, but written on by the player in the morning so they can still be “spent” for the dungeon in question.
Any character points being signed onto characters not on dungeon for example tombola points, one off rewards, club development fund points, should be done at the desk and added to the desk de-brief sheet, and any relevant cards stapled to said de-brief sheet.
Due to the above “loyalty points” please would all refs make sure they are including the names of their days monsters on the de-brief sheets.
Awarded CC points will no longer be e-mailed in. Instead they are to be recorded upon the de-brief sheets in the space provided. This will allow date tracking of when potential contentious cc points were earned, it will also allow a more flexible admin system to help elevate pressures on our GSM form time to time. There should be no need to e-mail in after the event as CC contracts should be shown to the ref prior to the event, and thus numbers available on the day.
More complex items, or non-standard items can still be e-mailed in for checking.

Moving back to crewing rewards, we appreciate people’s discussions on the forums and the ideas people suggest to try and tackle what has been an ongoing issue for many years. Whilst we appreciate whatever we do will not please everyone, we also appreciate increasing monster numbers benefits everyone. To that end if the “loyalty points” aren’t enough to entice everyone out for an extra day’s monstering this year, additionally on the day of crewing, any crew member (ref, a-ref, and monster) can choose to convert 6 credits per section at a rate of 6:1 for monster points. I appreciate those in the character points for crewing contingent, wont necessarily think this is a big enough step. However it is our hope that this increase should mean people have more monster points, and thus be able to convert them more effectively into character points when playing, at a rate that is double the current published rate. It also means we can still offer the special bonuses of character points for special days and special events.

Next up Lockers, a little overdue, but if you have one, please drop me an e-mail or see the desk staff to get 2019 paid up. The price for the year will remain unchanged at 30 credits or £25.

That’s it for now, hope to see you all in a cave soon.

As an addition to the above as mentioned in a separate post.

Desk and armoury staff are now included in the "loyalty point" scheme via the desk and armoury task lists.

As an incentive to get stuff done, and making our caves, clean, tidy, safe and cool, at the end of a weekend I will inspect stuff, if I think the task lists have been completed to a solid level I will award "crew loyalty points" as per the loyalty scheme.

Congratulations to Tim Treadwell & Ed Halligan, who both got to the magic 12 this weekend.
