The two men and the woman of the Baronesses Guard raised their tankards high as they toasted their deceased sword brother in the small Tavern of Fallow Reeve. They had recently arrived upon a Cooper’s Cart to retrieve the body of Simon Crow who had passed in his sleep two nights prior and were taking time to pay their respect while the Cooper unloaded his barrels with the help of the Tavern Keeper and his burly friend the Smith.

The three Guardsmen were joined by a few of the locals that shared their sorrows over the losses the village had suffered in the past week, with a number of their kin passing to the Sleeping Sickness, not to mention the terrible loss of young Hobb to the illness that had brought so many of them low and Chennel to her broken heart.

They drank deep to the memories of their absent friends and told stories of how the shadows had coalesced into nightmare forms during the daylight hours yesterday, the quick actions of the Smith, Herish and the Inn Keep, Trick had seen them round up people and get them to sanctuary in the Tavern’s basement while the two of them dealt with the few shadows that formed within the Tavern itself.

Stories turned to the small group of mercenaries that had visited the village about that time, one of them cursed a dirty Goblin for defiling the body of the poor lass Chennel. Others doubted they were truly mercenaries at all, three dirt covered tribal creatures and a Demon that must have been stepped on at the Dawn in Halgar accompanied by a portly balding man in white and followed by another taller horned creature that seemed to be recording their every move.

One thing the Guardsmen were very clear on was that there had been no hire from the Keep by the Baroness herself and there hadn’t been mercenaries hired by anyone else in the Barony for many a year.

Before long the consensus seemed to be they were likely behind the troubles even though the herbalist Jura spoke vocally for the Orc Pumpkin’s assistance in confirming that purgatives were the way to treat the illness and to confirm its source had been the well water.

Elsewhere, in one corner away from the bar and oblivious to the discontented murmurs of their Elders sat Janice surrounded by a gaggle of those too young to be in their cups. The young girl of nine held her straw doll proudly as she told the tale to of how Mr Stuffy had sensed the danger below the village and gone to investigate on his own. She, realising he was alone, climbed down the well after him and found him holding back nasty, horrid, nightmares from getting to the village. Mr Stuffy was so brave he kept her safe and even found some friends to help push the nightmares away. One of his friends was a giant Orc called Pumpkin that could fly! Mr Stuffy helped Pumpkin and his new friends push the nightmares all the way back to where they came from and then she and Mr Stuffy flew all the way back along the underground stream and up the well using Mr Pumpkins’s magic. And it was the most exciting day ever.
