I am very pleased to announce that as of today the Labyrinthe Wiki is open and available to all.

One of the almost unique features of LRP at Labyrinthe is the staggeringly huge amount of background that has gone into the Labyrinthe gameworld over the last 25+ years, with multiple continents, races, factions, churches, plots characters etc. For those that have been playing for years at Labyrinthe its one of the things that keeps them coming back. This background has come from many sources, including the huge number of referees that have run adventures and campaigns to the paper turn based facet of the game and of course from player driven background as well.

This rich and ever-growing background is a massive asset to the club, but brings with it a problem - how to all players, old and new, get to grips with this daunting amount of history and knowledge?

That is where we hope that the Laby Wiki will come into play.

The purpose of the Laby-Wiki is to give all players a freely available resource where you can come and look for information - both in-character and out of character. It's also a great tool for continuing to pass on in-game knowledge.

Hopefully the FAQs below will help with further describing this new major development:

How do I access this Labywiki?
The labywiki can be found at www.labywiki.co.uk. You don't need to register/log-in to access information so its open for anyone to read.

What's in it?
Well, as we launch the site we've made sure that there is a wealth of information across lots of subject areas.
In fact there has been a team of people involved in pre-populating almost 800 pages of information already.

The information is split into several categories, including Geography, Churches, Organisations, Guilds, Glossary, Creatures, People. Professions, Stories and many others.
A complete list of the categories can be found on the homepage of the wiki

How do I look for information?
There are several different methods to look for information on the wiki. You can either use the category listings on the main page to choose a subject area which will take you to a page that lists all the entries in that category, or you can type text in the search field to look for any pages with that text in the title or in the body of the page. Alternatively it can be quite fun just to click the Random Page button and see what comes up.

Is it "Finished"?
We hope that the Wiki is never "finished", as it should continue to grow as Labyrinthe continues to grow.
We have essentially "seeded" the wiki with some starting information, but the intention is for Labyrinthe club members (players, referees, monsters etc) to get involved and continue to add information.

So can I add information to the Wiki?
If you are a Labyrinthe club member then yes - absolutely.
It is our sincere hope that club members will get involved and add their character details, background information, stories, write ups of adventures, plot information etc. Anything to do with the Labyrinthe Gameworld is appropriate.

What can I add and what can't I add
Well, at a very high level, anything based on the Labyrithe gameworld that isn't copywrite to someone else can be added. System rules and guild abilities are covered by copywrite and should not be added (we’ve already added a fair bit of the sourcebook information onto the Wiki from a variety of existing publications, but it’s best to avoid putting anything else on which is already in a Laby publication)
All entries to the Laby Wiki are moderated, so need approval after they are submitted before they are viewable.

Why moderate the entries?
For several reasons. Firstly we want to have an opportunity to add formatting, categories etc that keep information presented on the Wiki consistent and easy to access. Secondly we want to ensure that the guidelines have been kept to, and thirdly to try to avoid any copywrite infringements.

Who moderates the entries
At the moment there are five people that have access to moderate posts. Discussions have been had to try to ensure a consistent approach to the moderation, but having a team to do this means that it shouldn't take too long for entries to appear for everyone.

So how do I add stuff?
Basic instructions on adding entries, together with an introduction to the more straightforward formatting can be found here
Once you get going with putting information onto the wiki it's pretty straightforward, but if anyone wants a quick demonstration then please do catch anyone listed at the bottom of the post when at the caves and we'll try to help out.
We do strongly recommend that you read the guidelines before posting entries though.

There has been a huge amount of effort already put in to getting the wiki to this point, from initial brainstorming, detailed direction/policy discussions, technical support, data entry/formatting/approving etc, and all of this effort has been done entirely voluntarily and for no reward by everyone on the team. Those involved to date are by no means "wiki-gurus" and much learning has been done along the way. We're sure that there is much still that can be done to improve layout/templates/versions etc, but as a team we were keen to concentrate on bringing the wiki to the point where it can be made available and come to life. After a while we will revisit the technological aspect of the wiki to look for improvements.

Phil and I would like to extend our unreserved thanks to the people that have had input into the Wiki to date who are (in no particular order); Ben Zealley, Jan McManus, BBB, Stuart Maggs, Lee Dale, Sarah Pointer, Huw Griffiths, Chris Andrews and Julian Wiffen.

We really do hope that club members enjoy reading and contributing to the LabyWiki, we think it’s a great way to make information freely available to all, but welcome your suggestions and feedback.

Regards,
Andy and Phil

Just a couple of additional pointers (some of these are already on the guidelines, but the ones that aren't we will add later today)

a/ Character biographies ideally should be submitted by the player that plays that character, or at least have the permission of the player to have their character added
b/ Only use player real names on submissions with their permission
c/ Try to use IM dates rather than "recently" etc. Using specific times makes the submission equally relevent in 10 years time as it is today
d/ If you hyperlink a word then its best to only hyperlink it the first time you use the work on that page.

Lots more guidance on the wiki iteself, but these were raised by the team as some important notes to get out there

Thanks,
Andy
