Labyrinthe Forum _ General Club Feedback and Suggestions _ almanac as a PDF

Posted by: Elferrick Apr 6 2012, 02:17 PM

Hi just a quick sugestion, would it be possible to obtain a current almanac in a PDF format so i could read it on my smart phone or pad. As PDF are not easly messed with but easly sent over email you could have a subscription list that thoughs that have payed in advance could find each month in their in box.

this would also printing costs down for you as you would not need as many down the caves. Not to mention any relevant changes would apear in the next issue or could be sent as a revision.

Im sure someone has already thought of it, but it just seemed a good idear.

yours wayne.

This would be especially useful for back issues. I've lost a couple of mine and now I'll never again have the stats for nightsoil unless they become available somehow.

I'm quite nifty with ebooks, and have offered to converts Almanacs and rule books into easily-readable Kindle/Kobo/pdf books, and have been told they might come back to me sometime, but not at the moment. This offer still stands.

I would imagine that the main problem is everyone would just 'borrow' a copy of their mate...

But that - as they say- is a WHOOOOOOLLLLLE other story...

Thank you for the offer Sally, but this isn't a technical challenge.

Ed has hit the nail on the head there.

It does make a reasonable amount of money for the club as is, which would be lost if we went to a PDF model.

However we are looking at publishing the older issues as PDF downloads. Hope to have an announcement on this soon.

NB I feel at this point I should point out that all contributions to and work involved in producing to the almanac is unpaid.

Julian
Almanac editor.

Would it not make sense to have old almanac races in the current system effects thread.

What about the Grimoire that went live on Amazon? That can't be shared or borrowed, so you shouldn't be losing money that way.

Yep it would,

I imagine that when there are enough that a separate publication with all the stats and backgrounds for these new races will be compiled for reference.

I seem to remember someone saying that formatting from the current books to the kindle format was a nightmare and not worth the effort.

Only a PDF isn't borrowing, it's copying the whole thing.

Though not stealing as there is no attempt to intentionally deprive...
Despite what the terrible adverts would try and make you believe.

And don't even get me started on 'Upto' broadband speeds....

[Yes, I do have an internal consistency, it's just not obvious..]

It doesn't have to fall within the strict legal definition of theft under the Theft Act 1968 to be "theft" in common parlance or to be morally equated with theft. It could still be a criminal offence, and dishonest, and involve permanently enriching yourself at someone else's expense (or attempting to).

Yes you could (illegally) photocopy someone's printed book, or whatever, but it's a whole lot more hassle than just clicking "attach" when you send an e-mail...

That is only if you share what you copy Matt. There is nothing wrong with individuals copying copyrighted materials as a back up for their own copy. It is actually becoming relatively common for DVDs / Blue-rays to also come with a digital download key so you can have an electronic copy too. I know I have backed up every one of my DVDs, Blue-rays, CDs and a good portion of my important books so as to ensure that I both have a resilient copy should the original be become unavailable as well as to allow me to consume them in the medium of my choice. I read consume most my media digitally, be that streamed to TV, read on kindle or either on iPad.

That said I fully appreciate the reluctance of the caves to risk a revenue stream, lets be fair, this is not a multi million pound enterprise who can afford drops in revenue, so I don't resent them wishing to protect their revenues at all.

And before anyone asks, no you can't have a copy!

Without meaning to offend, it is very easy. especially if you worked with HTML4
