Part 1 – 7 Februar, 1015

The sullen peace of the Baronies was broken by the passage of a group of mercenaries through a variety of Waldgrafines at the beginning of Februar. The group included a strange mix of two travellers from far-off Ishma, a pair of fey bailiffs from beyond the mists, a dark priest called Orlando, a tax accountant by the name of Gideon and Marcus, a rough northerner with a book of white magic. They were met by myself, Nathaniel nav Findias, and all benefited from the worthy and sage advice provided by Silas, Viktor and Lana of the Circle. Together the founders of the Silver Claw.

We were tasked with obtaining a silver roc egg and a particularly delicate root to perform a ritual. This would form the basis of an attack on a group of Hedge undermining the proper social order of the area.

We journeyed by Circle Transportation Rite to a path winding up a mountain in the Brandins. The area abounded with dark-souled vulture-men who were attacked and slain having checked there was no way to negotiate with them. Battling through their lands, and their wards and defences, we finally came to the heart of the creatures’ lair. There was a curious being there who tried to negotiate with us, before fleeing. He left a single silver roc egg behind and so we continued.
At the next we travelled to the forests to wrest the ritual root from the ground. With the aid of the druid from Ishma we were successful, and continued to the lair of the Hedge.

With the important ritual components carefully protected, we travelled into their den, but were taken by surprise as they leapt from cover to attack us. Using stealth and guile, the hedge managed to slay the priest Orlando. Their wardings, tricks and traps were overcome through the wise advice of the members of the Circle, and Gideon’s box of scrolls. Eventually Nat, the fey bailiffs and the Ishmaic contingent fell upon their werewolf leader and slew him. Viktor and Lana of the Circle performed the rite to dispersed the group and the first part of the day concluded successfully.

Following a pleasant lunch, the Baron of Takalia asked the group to investigate a nearby village where a demonic baby had been born. To their surprise, the group was joined by a dark and brooding figure by the name of Tyrius, with the scent of evil spirits and sharp weapons. A close eye was kept on him for the rest of the day.
Having spoken to the poor mother, the Blacksmith, the Baker and a trader, it transpired that the village had been tainted by the Hagarath, and people dominated by the leader of the local sect. In particular the baker had been dominated by a cloaked figure to use ritually empowered flour in his baking, turning the people over time into demon-kin.

Our brave group battled our way through powerful wardings and numerous undead guardians until finally, battered bruised and exhausted, we faced the witch who led the Hagarath. We knew that it had been she who had dominated the villagers and brought such a curse upon them. We engaged her in battle, but were unable to harm her as she was protected by curses and a phylactery. Seeing the battle failing, Lana of the Circle swiftly stepped in and brought her low with spirits, binding her into a death-like sleep.

The creature was returned to the Circle and dealt with, freeing all those who had suffered under the Hagarath’s ploys. The Baron of Takalia thanked the mercenaries, notably those of the Silver Claw, for their blood and power given that day.

Part 2 – 14 Februar 1015

Attending along with myself were Tyrius of the Tryst, General Arcus of the Nutcracker Regiment, Kassadin (a vampire of the Tryst), Calabrian Breach, Dweezle and Bernie (an enslaved spirit), all of the Catskinners, Tarek Ghaffari Baetan Baq of Ishma and Naso, the Dagger in the Dark.

Word was put out by one Ryan Rust, a dark hearted individual, that there was a focus of power within a shadow plane near to Ishma. While this power could be taken, Rust wished a teleport focus to be taken to the plane for him to transport there. This was no Imperial hire, but he gave us money to bribe a guard at the entrance to this house.

The house, it transpired, had been residence to the Thistle Family but had been too dangerous to approach for some time. Kassadin summoned a ghoul and commanded it to slay the guards, which it did.

Strange creatures abounded in the house, savagely defending the focus of their strength using the echoes of agony that had occurred there. Arcus discovered that a mother had slain her husband, throttled her two children and then killed herself, and it was this emotional trauma that had created the shadow realm.
Eventually we came to the heart of the house and were granted a way to the realm of shadow. At this point we took the teleport focus from the house and hid it, not trusting Rust one inch.

There we witnessed further echoes of the event – a husband wanting to defend his life’s work, a wife wanting her family to flee to safety. Finally, distraught and in a panic she turned on her husband and slew him. Distraught beyond reason and seeing nothing but death for her family, she killed her own children while singing them to sleep before hanging herself.

At the hard-reached focus of power we replicated this scene and, in doing so, summoned the spirit of the shadowland. We agreed to split the power between us equally, and all abided by it. Finally, to prevent Rust obtaining access, we killed the realm spirit and fled as the shadowlands collapsed around us.
As we left the house we came upon the City Watch of Alguz, seeking Kingfisher, or Kalladin or Kassadin for the slaying of the guards. He had already fled, and they threatened to put Tyrius to the question. He fled to safety also.

To conclude matters the teleport focus was taken to the Cathedral to Talthar in the hope that Rust might transport there unknowingly. The spoils were divided and we went our separate ways.

Part 3 – 22 Februar 1015

Called for a hire in the City of Deci, we were sent to the nearby town of Carcassonne to seek out Liam Tompkinson. He was the Oracle of the town, and had a hire sanctioned by the Empire. Of those attending I took names of myself, Viktor of the Circle, Tyrol Dawn, Halik bin Hassam of Ishma, Weasel, a beast called Flint and a beasthunter called Silverthorn. We were also joined by Seth, and archer.

We travelled to the town and its small bar, and were made welcome. While some sought Liam Tompkinson, others remained and were surprised to be attacked by wolves. A rite had been set upon the village, and if it was not broken all there would have been turned to Lycanthropy. On the sage advice of Viktor it was being dealt with when five werewolves magically appeared and attacked us. It was a miracle no mercenary died before Tyrol slew them with his spirit-bound blade. Regretfully many of the villagers perished.

Under Viktor’s clear and decisive guidance we found the foci for the rite and with only a small time remaining broke it before it could activate.

We had been told a family of Vagruhl had made their homes in the forest. We were joined by Lana of the Circle, and travelled to find these creatures to speak with them. We came across some lizard men speaking of foreign places and seeking gifts. After they had left Seth informed us they had been ebony fae in disguise.

We continued and, to a little surprise, discovered the Vagruhl were in fact the same pack of werewolves who had attacked the village and sought to ritually strike it. Their guards declared it was because a man had laid claim to their lands, breaking a treaty with the Empire, and they would only speak with him. Fortunately that man was me.

With their permission I travelled to their elders and as swiftly as possibly negotiated an arrangement. I explained that our group had been hired to recover a ritual object, and on doing so came across a cave filled with kobolds and drowe. We cleared them out, and I laid claim to them to prevent further encroachment from the drowe. In return for relinquishing my claim to the caverns to the tribe, they accepted that the blood already shed was sufficient for the insult done to them by Captain Hough breaking the ancient pact with the Empire. Tyrol Dawn was to carry word that both sides would declare their faithfulness to the pact once more. The werewolves promised a boon to Tyrol and myself for this peace being negotiated.

This matter resolved as best we could, we travelled to seek the ebony fae who had attacked simple travellers. We hunted them, found them and in short order slew them before they could fuddle our minds. A day well spent, we returned to Deci and were paid handsomely.
