The Kallah looked nervously at their City Spirit. He stood beside two Hanot who were standing over the slumped form of one of their own who had obvious, deep and troubling scratches across their face.

One of the Hanot spoke. “We tried to restrain him, but he was absolutely determined to claw his own eyes out. He was screaming about the darkness devouring his soul and how he had to stop it. Three of us couldn’t hold him down, it was like a man possessed and not in the way we like so to speak. In the end we enacted the Sellaville Sleep boss.” He punched his balled right hand of a fist strongly into his left palm as he finished to illustrate his meaning.

The City Spirit lifted the slumped head of the unconscious Hanot and turned it gently in his hands to look at it from a variety of angles, a look of sadness upon his features as he did so. The second of the two Hanot spoke. “There is quite a list of outbreaks from the past week. Two priests at the Sheahan shrine by the East gate. The girls at Madame Red’s. A swathe of the Watch from the South Quarter. Numerous Sellavillians high and low born alike, and it’s affected a handful of Hanot that work the Tip so to speak.”

The Kallah spoke up. “We think we’ve traced the start of it or at least the first person that brought it into the City. A pair of Barbarians were guided in by one of the Druid’s of the Stang. Apparently, they had been hunting a pack of Ghouls troubling the wilds. After they had tracked em down and dealt with them the pair started to lose their sight that evening around the campfire. Drouls would maybe make some sense but Ghouls?”

The City Spirit spoke “Bring the Druid to me and get the other two visitors to our city locked up somewhere safe for everyone’s sake.”

Tarquin reviewed the tally sticks one of the scribes had set aside for him. It was clear there was a power that had been building within the Rural lands over the past weeks. Until now it had not been strong enough for the city’s wards to truly pinpoint, but as he wove his arts over the cities rites and those that served the rural lands the evidence was now irrefutable.

Whatever this power was it was concentrated at a point within the Barrowdells.

However there was something else, like a second heartbeat or a shadow where there shouldn’t be one. He paused his thought as he concentrated for a moment, cleared his head and uttered a small incantation. Well that was good at least he was confident it wasn’t temporal.

His shoulders dropped as he sighed to himself, he would still need to investigate further before it impacted the nearby lands and the people who dwelt upon. The Nobles concerned actually cared for their people, which was to be commended but this wasn’t the only thing he had to deal with right now.

The City would need to trust in the mercenary caste to deal with whatever it was, he just needed to work that out so he could give them the best chance of success.
