Hi gang. Looking at battle Master there's o class, b class and e class. Anyone ever done an unarmed one and if so what pointers could you give. This would be for a post powerhouse winter elf barbarian monk (ner...coz that lot ain't enough). 😀

Cheers in advance.

I've got past (but haven't bought due to another multi-class) the same as 'O' class.
Expect my Unarmed combat goes through Pac and Dac.

600 points in total.

Could you not apply "e" class and modify the enhanced distancing so it applies when using unarmed?

I know people have got reverse distancing with unarmed fairly easily. Not sure on Lee's stance on it though

Isn't that idea just the basis of forearm parry etc?

Distancing combat is using a large weapon to keep blows at bay which translate as -x number of damage.
So reverse distancing = reducing damage by using a small weapon - think Sai or sword breaker (pics below)
Where as forearm parry negates damage completely.

The logic behind it is that you step inside their reach so they can't swing at you properly, so -x damage

It might not be as far away as you thought. I don't know if you've heard but battlemaster isn't on table 10 any more http://www.labyrinthe.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=21977

That said, Unarmed as a whole is a bit naff. Nobody wants to monster against the unarmed guy whose primary ability is to not react to getting hit as they stand inside the monster's arc and overbear them with a stream of qua-qua-qu-q-q swung piston-like, like you're doing a speed metal pat-a-cake solo, so I've come up with an ability to make an unarmed character not be the subject of such derision.

"Good at punching"
I am so good at punching that I am more than a match for anyone using a weapon.
I may phys-rep my enhanced reach and parrying capability by fighting with a bastard sword.

yeah agree with leo, unarmed is always a little but rubbish, it always feels drumrolled, or there's a worry about getting hit too hard

i always had aps failed by phil that were damage reductions against b class due to being inside their reach, his reasoning was that b class is bad enough anyway so to make it less effective was not a good idea

which i can understand

not to turn this into a martial arts debate - but I hated Wing Chun - chain punching, folding ... meh.
Give me jujitsu / karate anytime. Just a personal choice and unarmed martials art don't translate well into Laby.

the old skool damage reduction was called "crowding" which had the additional benefit of reducing the opponents distancing!!

Are people going to appreciate being chain punched whilst they're monstering though. Not saying that you would be unsafe as its easy to do safely but its not going to encourage good fighting from the monsters once they realise your technique is step in and chain punch to the chest. Of course this may well not be your only tactic, but I still feel like unarmed fighting is at a considerable disadvantage in LARP, especially in a high fantasy system.

This kind of fighting also doesn't transfer seamlessly to larp because real world systems are designed for people who react to blows and would be stopped by these attacks. That being said I would love to see if it worked at labyrinth, just not convinced it would myself.

The things I would think of, and this wouldn't even need to be in a battle master multiclass is to get lots of physical strikes that do effects, that way reducing the amount of drum rolling you need to do and incapacitating monsters in a more cinematic way. So things like building up flick of the wrist to include blindness strikes, better stunning blows, leg sweeps. Reducing their "cooldown", getting some extra one use innates, maybe look at neuronics for effects to replicate. and physical greater cudgel style innates where you can do certain abilities at will for 5 minutes. Of course these things only help you against F&B targets.

Appreciating your comments about fx. It unless you e fought me you don't know anything. In the past I know certain monks just chained into the chest until death. I try hard to make it much more cinematic. Now please let's drop this. Only just come back to the caves and I won't tolerate ppl judging me without actually fighting me. I'm keen to open up for kicks and locks but safety and rules will not allow. Ask hatchy and jack nihil if I'm [----] at unarmed.

GSMs have pretty much always been against the "Close Quarters Combat" which is what Reverse Distancing was originally called when passed because of the tendency to encourage bad fighting styles.

Remember UAC combat is the only time we are allowed to use unpadded solid cored weapons...

Even with care its going to sting at the end of the day for a monster if he's been battered all day with UAC.

All of which reminds me of the comedic roleplay of Meltcuryn (The Ange of Strife) Teaching Torwin (High Priestess of Shaehan) proper Pure Spirit Claw combat technique "No Torwin, hack and slash, hack and slash"

Nothing personal, just a moan at the existence of unarmed combat as an option.

On a more productive note, seeing as unarmed damage grades for a battlemaster weapon master monk are fairly easy to come by, but calling higher damage grades rarely makes the monsters pay more attention, perhaps a tradeoff like:

Fight smarter not harder:
Once per enemy per different damage grade, instead of calling a high damage grade I can instead call the following:
Quin: knockback
Six: knockdown
Seven: stunning blow
Eight: Grand Tan
