My 2019-edition book has that costing the Tradition slot (which I used on flavour and a cheap stacking weapon mastery - Monastic Paladin may not be the power play but I stand by it wink.gif ) to unlock the MR option - was there a more recent change that relaxed that?

(Hope you don't mind the slightly cheeky "are you sure about that?" question - I wouldn't be surprised if there'd been an update, but I just wanted to double-check whether it's that or an annoying detail that slipped your attention.)

Re Paladins there are lots of ways to go. Front Line + Buy as 1st class warrior is really tough. So too is MC Wizard. I think it is right you’ll never get to be quite as much of a tank as a warrior, and never as flowing with power as a wizard. There are niches that are uniquely or strongly paladinic. Things I have seen over the years or thought about:

- specialise vs demons and/or undead
- specialise as a ‘shield of the weak’, including “I give xxx, and <target group> benefits from my selfless act by…”
- the pacifist
- the focus (either draw attacks to self to spare others… cf the brown spell Lightning Rod but much more generalised) or a sort of ‘commander’ type taking charge of a group for militaristic benefits (eg in a shield wall you orchestrate, everyone gains +3/3/3 distancing or 33% off etc)
- think about cool dying effects

For what it is worth, I took a ‘generalist’ paladin up to about 3,000 pts on the basis of MC white wizard, bedazzle and a few purchased healing innates… very enjoyable! Though always and especially on extended lengths you’ll get plot lines that push and test your morality (kill me, not the innocent sacrifice, etc etc)… so set out a clear stall early (even if just known to you) and be ready to be pushed, pulled and stretched!!!

It does take the tradition slot. However if you have changed your mind on direction it is possible to speak to Lee about a small respend to change what you have bought. Especially for newer characters and/or players.

Not sure on the etiquette here - I don't want to get too deep on specifics on a thread that started off as "common useful things for reference"! - but I really appreciate the ideas here, and the Focus one definitely caught my eye for what I'm thinking with Melody. It's reopened my "forces or healing?" debate - I don't see an alignment restriction on a Paladin's choice of miracle tree beyond the normal for priests, and I like the idea of throwing around a few control effects, but healing really fits with the bit of coincidental jade-magic theming I mentioned, so I was leaning in that direction; but now you've got me thinking about a VoP upgrade to make someone target me instead of whoever they're threatening again, and that really appeals. That one I do actually need to decide soon, too - before I buy my first miracle innate, ideally. wink.gif

And thanks for the answer about the tradition! I'll give it some thought - if I remember correctly it'll only really matter at higher levels, so I might just roll with it and see where my choices take me. I won't be down that often and vitae is limited, so it's fairly likely I'll never hit the ranges where the 1st-class buy-as really matters, anyway.
