I'm looking at a bodyguard-esque multiclass for my budoka, and I'm looking for what has worked well in the past and what limitations there are.
The main thing that would floor me would be supernatural fx, but as a straight warrior has anyone justified countering spells/miracles or extra defenses when they're not of that powerbase? I'm also keen to here of any defensive type abilities - temp life increases for each new opponent, damage reductions, enhancements to parrying? Thanks for any input Dave H |

A good place to start by looking at is valdstayn, could do a multi-class for that but where you pick a person at the start on the day. Then can build on their abilities for supernatural defences and the like. Probably more difficult to get outright stopping spells from happening, but making them hit you with enough MAC and resistances is still really strong

You might also take a look at Clan Kynnard (Torsland Dales ch. option in Almanac 7 in the downloads section).
Rob S. had a Valdstayn noble bodyguard thing and various bodyguard bits so may be worth a pm. Giles. Clan Kynnard Descended from the former bodyguard of a sallow prince who retired here and taught his sons this skills, the members of Clan Kynnard have often made a living hiring themselves out as bodyguards. They make a point of staying out of political debates or passing judgement on those they guard. They are known also for being ready to turn up as an armed posse to help other clans being attacked by the local tribals – for this quite a few folks owe them a favour or two. Clan Kynnard are Labyrinthian humans but may be Valdstyn, counting as hedge for abilities and progression (obviously, they aren‟t baronial, and do not progress/suffer limitations as baronial). They may not join a political or social guild but gain the following benefits. Take killing blow 1/day for anyone within 20 feet (they take damage based on the attacked person‟s defences/resistances OR their own defence/resistances, whichever is the worse.), knockback 1/day, 1/day for 5 minutes they may grant any one ally the benefits of any distancing abilities they possess so long as they are within 10 feet (the ally does not need to wielding weapons for this, only the clan Kynnard member) |

Thanks, that's really helpful. I was looking at Valdstayn but was mindful it was vs magic fx only; would it be feasible to mimic these fx vs all powerbases without a supernatural power base myself? Perhaps the take ranged fx, but to reduce potency don't get the equivalent to the +2MAC?
Hadn't seen that in the almanac, so that's handy! Dave |

My Valdstayn has a tradition of "All my valdstayn things are now also spirit (and also I get some Sac and stuff)". Very worth it, cost about 150pts.

Supernatural AC vs ranged effects, resistance levels or fractionals vs ranged effects and innates of immune to ranged effects (when guarding a fixed point) Of course... shock kills you David |

My Ritual Bodyguard Tradition for Yvanderriel gives me innates of "Intercept" Supernatural effects so I can take them instead of the person I'm guarding.
Also gives me an "Interpose" so I can throw myself in the way of area effects to grant a 1/2 Effect to the person I'm guarding (I think MCC resisted putting in must yell "NOOOOHHHH!!!" whilst doing so...) Think carefully about playing a bodyguard.
Do you want to spend all day standing next your charge, only getting into a fight when something comes near them? By painful experience, the minute you get stuck in is the minute a kamikaze monster steams in from another direction and decks the person you were guarding. Alternatively you stick to them like glue but have a dull day and the other party warriors ask if you ever intend to give them a hand. Same goes for if you had the skills to deal with traps / wardings / translation etc - you can't take your eye off the ball to get involved. Plus by definition you are less important socially than the person you guard, so odds are you aren't taking the lead in any conversation. Its a cool concept but it can be a recipe for not interacting with a lot of the dungeon. Julian -------------------- Embrace your inner munchkin
