When reading through the draft report from the recent survey it was clear that we needed to spend some time putting some extra effort into improving the young player events.

Although we are still working through a set of ideas for improving the young player experience at Labyrinthe and for expanding the player base for the younger player adventures, there are a few changes which we felt we should implement as soon as possible.

The details of these changes are provided below. There will be more improvments over the course of 2011, and we hope to bring news of those further changes over the next couple of months.

* Forum area designated for younger players only

You may already have noticed that the old young player threads have either moved or disappeared completely. They have been replaced by a new forum sub-set which is set aside for younger players only.
We would request that adult players that are not set as moderators on the young player forums refrain from posting on the young player forums (you can use the forum setting to not show posts from these forums if you wish). They are set aside for young players and moderators only so that they can post here without fear of derision or comment from older players.
For the moment there are only a couple of forum moderators here, but we will add others (including the young player referees) as we go along so that the moderators can post helpful answers to queries as well as moderate posts.
Young players are ok to post outside of these special forums, but will be treated as adult posters in those areas.

* New Young Player Referees and Referee Coordination

The quality of young player adventures is a paramount importance to us, and we appreciate that younger players want to play adventures where they are treated with respect and given an engaging, challenging and enjoyable roleplaying experience.
Because of this Jo Branscombe has agreed that from January 2011 she will be coordinating the young player referees and adventures. Initially this will involve helping with the running of the young player adventures and training up new young player referees. She will be making sure that the young player adventures are of a consistent high quality, that they are well written and propped and that they are integrated into the gameworld and continuity coordinator function.
Jo will start by working with a small group of new referees and after a while will look to expand that group to any others that may be interested in joining the group and helping to develop the younger player events.

* Guaranteed Adventures

From January we will book a young player adventure every other week, on Saturdays. Until further notice these will run regardless of the number of players booked. We will be concentrating a lot of effort next year in attracting new young players, and we feel that it is important that you know that these adventures will run. If we can grow the player base from where it is at the moment then we will look to then move to weekly adventures again, but until that point we will guarantee the running of your fortnightly bookings

* Post adventure workshops

Again starting from January, on each of the days where there is a young player adventure running, we will be holding a post-adventure workshop in either the tavern or the hiring hall from 5pm to 6pm. These workshops will be run either by the GSM or the Senior Referee, and are optional.
During the workshop the GSM or Senior Referee will be available to answer any questions you have - perhaps you didn't understand something that happened on the adventure, or you want some advice on how to spend your character points, or you're interested in submitting a points app but aren't sure how to. We may also use these sessions to run training on combat, de-trapping, makeup etc as well. If there is something you would like to have covered in these workshops then let us know and we'll see if we can arrange it.

Phil and I would like to take the opportunity to thank Jo and the people who have already agreed to take part in the young player refereeing. This is an important initiative and although it will certainly be a big effort from all involved we are confident that it will also be very rewarding.

Regards,
Andy
