I'm a parent with a child who is keen to play for the first time next year. This weekend I heard a couple of disturbing comments about the level of language on a recent young player's event, which makes me concerned that perhaps it's better to wait a few more years before bringing them down.

That's obviously far from an ideal result - can the management please explain what systems are in place to protect young people and to ensure that events will be fun for young players of all ages, not just dominated by the older children? Is this normal behaviour?

Thanks

Stuart

Firstly no I don’t believe it is normal behaviour.

There are a number of complex factors involved, with a couple of unusual circumstances, certainly the weekend gone had a very unusual circumstance which I haven’t seen in the last 3 years, and doubt we will see again in the near future.

I think it is worth mentioning, young players are broadly the future of the club, and one that is regularly discussed behind the scenes, Kat and I in the last 3 years have had more meetings to do with young players than any other labyrinth subject. Bar our general GSM catch up with Lee.

There is always an ongoing assessment of young players, as to their suitability within the young player segment of the club. This has a number of sides to it, and isn’t simply are they to advanced for young players. It also needs to take into account are they mature enough for adult players. From a management point of view we have always looked to try and move young players up in at least a pair or a small group. Dan and Callum obviously spring to mind, as do Lizzy, Felix and Conor. The transition from YP’s to Adults can be a hugely daunting prospect for a 15 year old, and given the time we lose most young players from the club is this transition period, it needs to be done delicately with their best interests in mind, as well as also observing the needs of the other existing young players, and existing adults.

We have also in the previous month had a couple of minor reports of less than ideal behaviour from young players, this has been feed back to us by the referees, and those players involved have been chatted to by one of the YP ref team who was more comfortable with having that conversation.

It is also a testament to the quality of young players how many of them have parents or older relatives within the club, so I think and I am sure, laura, tim, Richard, Pete, Chris and others would all agree when I say your kids would have a great time, and you should not allow isolated incidents to put you off.

We also recently had a situation where 4 new players registered on our website, came to young players because of their age they were default put into young players. 4 new players on the same day without initial “office contact” to help decide yp’s or adults is unheard of in recent years. When they arrived, it was fairly obvious that probably adults would have been a better playing option for them, however on the day the adult dungeons where of a level that was nowhere near appropriate for new players. On this particular day this led to the average age being a lot higher than it would normally be and resulted in a slightly more boisterous group of young players. Needless to say they were told on the day that adults is the part of the club they should be in, and in future that is were they would have their Labyrinthe fun. This isn't the ideal circumstance, however neither would be well you can play, welcome to the max 3K, or no you cant play, but please come and try adults another time.

Young players is an ongoing issue with low player numbers and even lower ref numbers, its why some months ago it was decided that it would only run every other week to elevate the pressure of finding two referees for every young player event. Two referees is required for the safe guarding procedures which were designed by Ref team Dallen, who still commit their time to young player reffing and between that and scouts have probably forgotten more about safeguarding than most of us will ever know.

I have probably gone on to much, but I am fairly passionate about all aspects of our club and believe young players is good, is a safe environment for children between the age of 10-15 to have fun and produce the club of the future. I am of course always happy to discuss things at greater length and am happy to switch to phone or e-mail to talk in greater depth.

Regards
Duncan
