After some delay caused by Legion stuff, here’s my report on our trip to Port Miere last month. It should be shorter than normal because I’ve already dealt with matters relating to the Pantheon of Seven separately.

We had decided to deal with anomalies #3 and #12, being those external to the Citadel where incursions were occurring, and #4-10, being a linked set of anomalies within the Citadel interior.

We started with anomaly #3, in the Citadel entrance, a planar weakness through which demons had been attacking, and fought off by the Alfari. We spoke to the Reavers outside who warned that the demons would attempt to control people using dark spirits and bronze magics. The portal was one which could only be closed when the anomaly was resolved from the inside, so we had little choice but to go through. Inside we fought empowered corpses and demons making use of dominion miracles; Dusk was aware that this was a fragment of a plane that had been destroyed, and everyone on it killed, some time ago. We deduced that this place was linked to the Pantheon of Seven, and that there was a fragment of Chisomo (whose angel we had encountered in the Lighthouse on our Maii trip to Miere) and another one of the Seven there, Chibueze, associated with dominion and rulership, and our best course of action was to entreat with this other by protecting it from Rachane, the Devourer.

With this in mind we proceeded further in, finding more of the forces we had fought previously, and a prisoner, Arthur, in a cell whom they had been keeping captive. After some weaselling with words it transpired he was a worshipper of Certizal, which led to a pointed end to that particular conversation. I was able to speak to him and ascertain that he had been instructed by Louhi to come here and place small blue gems throughout the plane. He was aware of where the followers of Louhi had been meeting, and that they were intending to trap and ritually kill the remaining Chosen Three (information which I relayed to Achramas, who was of the view that prior to his ascension and stealing of Ilmater’s power, Louhi would not have had a chance against Mielikki, Tapio or herself, and that Mielikki was making concerted efforts to hunt down and kill all of Louhi’s minions he could find). Some further scrying about the gems revealed that these were to enable The Watcher of The Ages to perceive through the gems, which made sense in so far as it would therefore be spying on its fellow-divinities. We found and removed all of these that we could.

In a room along from the cell was an altar to Chibueze, guarded by a powerful altar spirit. This was willing to let me or Dusk in but not anyone else, which I would like to put down to the well-known charm and good looks of the 68th, but actually was related to being direct servants of god (any god, I think, not Milora in particular). I studied the altar, which enabled one to exert one’s will to cause Chibueze to hear what it was one had to say; a forceful form of prayer, if you will. This I did and was able to communicate why we were here and gain agreement that we could pass to reach the fragment of Chibueze which was protecting a fragment of Chisomo. Chibueze was unconcerned by the stones placed on behalf of The Watcher of the Ages, saying that it would seek to manipulate as it always did. After this conversation the altar spirit allowed us all to pass through.

Beyond the altar were angels of Chisomo, which was being influenced by Chibueze’s protection of Chisomo, such that they were using dark spirits to try and control people without willing this to happen. They were willing but unable to let us pass, so we incapacitated them. As it turns out they were all later eaten by Rachane, but we tried.

We were able to fight our way to a room where the fragment of Chibueze (red wool) was wrapped around that of Chisomo (white wool) and entangled with the black ribbon of Rachane. Dusk and I separated the ribbons whilst Dusk spoke to Chibueze and worked out how we could safely transport them back to Miere. He may wish to expand on this conversation, but the upshot of it was that Dusk carried the two fragments back and I kept the ribbons until they could be safely added to the others we had collected the last time we were in Miere.

Whilst this conversation was taking place, others of our group had encountered an angel of Tinashe. I don’t know what was said and it would be very helpful if someone could add that. After a while a very powerful aspect of Rachane, possibly Rachane itself, broke through into the realm and proceeded to force its way out. Using power against it made it stronger as it devoured it, and it also devoured the altar of Chibueze and the angels of Chisomo. We fought as best we could to keep it from getting to the portal but it consumed walls and pushed through those fighting it and we were unable to keep it from passing through into Miere. It is worth noting that the wounds it inflicted could not be healed (by me, at any rate) whilst it was present.

Interestingly, Rachane has not to my knowledge at the time of writing shown on the Miere threat map, and I wonder if Inquisitor Wilton can configure this to enable us to track it. Rachane now has the scent of the fragments of Chisomo and Chibueze and will seek to devour them, we are working on a plan to try and lure it into fighting Certizal or Salas but this is in the very early stages of formulation and has been discussed in my notes about the Pantheon of Seven.

After some scrying to try and work out what had just happened we reached the conclusion that there was little we could do about Rachane at this point, and headed to anomaly #12, a planar weakness in the Citadel exterior, through which elemental creatures had been coming and fighting the City Watch. These proved to be firey elementals and the anomaly a portal into a plane of fire, possibly part of the Elemental Plane of Fire. The whole place was hot and unpleasant, and staying there for too long was going to kill people, in addition to which it was full of firey demons and really irritating imps. We quickly found a particular imp that was able to grant people to ability to withstand the flames of the place by snorting ground up rock (strange but true); it gave us some of the rock in return for Snow performing a ridiculous dance.

Thus fortified, we carried on exploring the plane, finding more demons, a wizard named Coal from Primus who was here to learn more about fire magics, and an altar that didn’t in itself serve any real function but was dedicated to Kurshid the Enkindled, an evil deity of the fires of the sun and another one of the Pantheon of Seven. We ascertained that to resolve the anomaly we needed to collect three artifacts of importance to Kurshid and then summon one of its minions as part of a test. This we did, through means of dispelling some powerful elementals, trading with another imp, and Morgan exchanging the dangerous amulet of many colours for the last object from an Efreet. These objects when placed together summoned a large firey creature which we defeated, resolving the anomaly and causing the portal to being closing. We left at speed, leaving behind the collected artifacts as to do otherwise would have enraged Kurshid.

We then turned to the matter of the linked anomalies #4-10, which were all separate events, mostly secundal reflections, but in some way overlaid with or linked to each other. Hopefully Inquisitor Wilton will be able to provide specific numbers for the individual anomalies.

The first of these was the Port Miere City Watch House, where the members of the Watch had been killed by the Rite of the Ocean’s Claim and then raised as undead. They did not wish this state, but were continually re-summoned when slain, unchained or dismissed. Within the centre of the Watch House was a shrine to the faith of Dead Heroes, on which had originally rested a shield owned by the Sergeant of the Watch, which was now held by the undead he had become. To resolve the anomaly we needed to recover the shield and re-consecrate the shrine, but this could not be done until another anomaly which was somehow layered on top of this one was resolved.

We therefore left the Watch House and headed towards this overlaying anomaly, which involved us being assailed by creatures wielding onyx mana and in which a pervading sense of maddening unpleasantness existed, similar to that found near the gateway to the Isle and on Tapio’s ship. After we sealed (actually, using a door) the opening through which the onyx creatures were coming, Morgan discovered a door heavily warded with lightning and we were able to move on.

This part of the anomaly was linked to a further anomaly, the centre of which was an object guarded by three deeply irritating fox creatures (later discovered to be minions of Evaristus, the devoured god of luck from the Pantheon of the Seven), which were convinced we had come to steal their prized possession and whose unnatural luck made them almost impossible to defeat.

We skirted around them and continued onwards, finding three of the Port Miere commonfolk who had been driven mad by their presence in this anomaly and were trying to kill each other for no reason they could determine. They were healed and transported out remotely by Inquisitor Wilton using the map. Further in were some of the odd silent spindly demons we had encountered on Tapio’s ship and killed quickly as they looked incredibly dangerous – despite having no actual evidence of their fearsome nature we adopted the same plan again. This done we discovered the centre of the anomaly, an altar with a focus upon it that was insane, and could only be touched or negated by someone who was themselves invulnerable to its effects. Between Dusk and myself we managed to do this, breaking the focus and resolving the anomaly.

We left the area, passing the irritating fox creatures again, and returned to the Watch House where we laid the Sergeant of the Watch to rest, obtained his shield and reconsecrated the shrine with the shield upon it, resolving the anomaly and allowing the spirits of the dead Watch to move on. I’m not certain if it was Salas who had bound them following their deaths (although his rite had killed them), if anyone has a spare question at some point I’d quite like to know.

The next anomaly involved entering a realm which was in some way linked to dreams or nightmares. We fought a number of undead who used runes of power against us, and seemed limitless in their numbers, whilst Dusk, Morgan and I tried to work out the meaning of a nightmare echo that when awoken provided some background information about the Trickster and his servants, which I won’t detail here as it touches on our plans against Rachane / Louhi, although I’m happy to discuss it in person when we next gather. Being concerned with this part of the anomaly I’m not certain how we finally resolved this, although we did; I think it may have involved a magical box or some such.

Finally, we travelled to an anomaly involving plants. There were some plants, they were dangerous, we fought them, they weren’t great conversationalists, they didn’t have any paperwork, there wasn’t any historical significance that I could ascertain about them. Just plants. We rescued someone from the plants, but again I don’t think they had any knowledge that advanced our endeavours. We killed a really big poisonous plant, it resolved the anomaly – I’m sorry, I know you all expect pages of detail from me by now, but they were plants. If you want someone who finds plants more interesting you’ll need to bring a druid.

As we were leaving, a couple of our number were able to stealthily head back to the fox creatures and steal their prized object, thus resolving the anomaly – this proved to be silver ribbons associated with the dead god Evaristus, and provides some of Evaristus’ luck power, although it has been tainted by Rachane. It is hoped we can use this in some way as part of a plan to stop Rachane.

In conclusion, we have resolved anomalies #3 and #12 within the Citadel, and a total of five from the linked set #4-10. This leaves two remaining in the Citadel from that set, along with #11, detailed below, although we would need to find a way to ameliorate the drowning effects before investigating it.

Anomaly #11

Location: The Citadel, Courtyard
Nature: Unknown
Notes: Anyone attempting to investigate this anomaly via the map becomes suddenly incapable of breath, in the manner of a Drown spell. This effect is permanent until dispelled. Caution is advised in the event of further investigation.

Otherwise we need to consider what if anything we can do about Rachane, and if we can formulate some sort of clever plan using the map to trap it or use it against Louhi / Salas / Certizal.

Comments and suggestions welcome as ever.

As an update, the linked anomalies we resolved were #4 (the Watch House), #5 (the Plants), #6 (the irritating foxes and Evaristus' luck), #7 (the altar of madness linked to the Isle) and #9 (Nightmare realm).

That leaves #8 and #10 to be resolved, about which we know very little if anything. We also have the Netter's Shrine, the Citadel courtyard anomaly, and the echo of Salas' ritual chamber for which Louhi is the key.
