South East of Bildteve, within the curve of the Gilmedian Hills and bordered roughly by the River Wine, the Broken Lands are a place as free from the Empire as could be wished. There is precisely no law here, no influence from without and it is a land of the non human tribes: Orc, Goblin, Troll, Ogre and stranger tribes. There are almost no mannish tribes here at all. No one cares for glory or renown. The Broken Lands are the result of twenty five years of concerted adventuring. So many hundreds of mission to kill Orcs and Goblins led to them being pushed further away and a few at a time, they gathered in this relatively remote part of the wilds remote as there was not one Lord that dwelled here and almost no citizens whatsoever. The Broken Lands are terribly wild. Thickly forested they are cut by a score of rivers and a hundred decent streams. Hilly, wooded there is plenty of shelter and over the years plenty of Goblins, Orcs and the like. There is now very little, if any of the Mittlenacht here. There was but over successive ‘Dawns. The people are so uncomplicated it does not take Primus long to see it and the nature of the Orcs mean little of those forces that would bring the Mittlenacht into existence have endured in this place. This of course is entirely compounded with the way they eat Shaman… There are spirits but these are either of place and thus are totems without the need for Shaman, or they are wanderers caught up in the brutality of the land. The few surviving Shamans dwell as one tribe and it is a bitter one, in the mountains and hills, especially to the south. They are are mysterious, thin, hungry, angry, scared and forming their own very odd society… Old tribes were forgotten as most here arrived in ones or twos. Tribes rise and fall as they are united by one chieftain or another. Trolls live in family groups, Goblins either form really big tribes or are slaves and food to others. It is the Orcs that have done best out of the Broken Lands. With Man removed they are top of the pile for being organised and all the longer lived / lasted of these new tribes have fallen into the traps of man. Their chieftains believe they are chosen by gods and spirits, they lust after luxuries and some even fight in shieldwalls! The land is hard to navigate, and impossible to map. It is easy to get lost here. With all the brutal tribes the stranger beasts have taken to lurking and ambushing, even old spirits of place have become cruel things and a traveller has a very hard time of it. Along the Wine and the rivers going east into the Broken Lands are a number of trade towns. Clever traders exchange pelts, treasure, meat and other items for things that those within do not have, decent weapons, buckles, skillets. The sort of simple goods no one considers but has a bad time without. And of course some of the Orcs no longer want rough furs, they want fine pelts. The Broken Lands are penned in by forts at Bessens Source and the Rose (North West and South East) both of which are enough to keep the Broken Lands from spreading. Outlaw Priests, Dark Hermits and stalking Unholy Champions exert their power here by a very fine line here. On the one hand they are safe from the Empire, on the other side they may get eaten. The cleverest dominate an Orc Chieftain and rule the tribe through him. Here the old tradition of Evil Overlord with Orc minions is maintained, at least until he slips up and gets eaten. The Orcs do raid out occasionally but since they have all they wish here such raids are relatively infrequent, for instance, in the years since the Ogre Walking God, Og, last walked off into the sunset the Orcs have destroyed the Moot, that was once home to the Ogres. However there is no chance of the Orcs rising up as an army as twice now Kings have risen up, and both times they fell apart to infighting. Nobles do not dwell here because it has always been a cursed place to them. Ranging from when the Princes were actually defeated in battle here, to when the Republic suffered the Mad Lords here, to Kesselharn leeching the place, to the Baronies fighting up by here… Many have tried to make the land there own as there is a wealth or metal, wood, good dark earth, herds and always has been. It is indeed one of the ‘richest’ places in the Empire theoretically, just that it’s always ended up to the bad. The land hates the Blood here. But that’s all right, as the Blood hates it too. Too much bad history… Strangely though it would appear that Earl Edwige, Head of the Hall of Swords, has very recently been arranging expeditions and forays into The Broken Lands and it has been hinted that he has even been re-forming his Warhost of late… -------------------- Grey's Law: Any sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice...
